Hi all I'm trying to find out if it's possible to stream dvd's that i've ripped from my hard drive via my PS3, is this possible and how do you do it. I've already used tversity to stream some files but it won't work on ripped dvd's.
Any Ideas?;)

Not tried this myself but if your DVDs are stored on a windows computer then you should be able to use Windows Media Player to stream them to the PS3.

Just to add to this...i have tried and it will only steam movies in the video formats supported by Playstation 3. It does not stream VOBs.

And I shouldn't think for a minute it'll stream .ISOs either.

Perhaps not using the earlier versions of the firmware but it does now. Perhaps it's a host problem if you can't stream them?
It doesn't do ISOs tho.

I've compressed dvd's for use on my psp... these stream to appletv & ps3 with the right software.
iso, vob, dmg are not suitable for streaming the file needs to be a format the ps3 can read!
Try this> PS3Video9 if your a pc user... the ps3 will read mpeg1 thru mpeg4!
If your a mac user, like me, then ffmpegx is a good option... these software packages will convert the vob file to mpeg... you will need to use WMP to stream to ps3 once you have the supported video in you library... streaming on the mac isnt as simple at present...

Being as we have (presumably) all spent many hours ripping to ISO and VOB, telling us that we can convert our files to mpeg2 or mpeg4 in order to be able to play them isn't what we want to hear.

I stream from a NAS...
Once you have ripped the DVD down, use DVD shrink in re-author mode to create a single VOB file, right click the file in windows, select properties, change the .VOB to .mpg.
The PS3 then sees that as a MPEG-2 file, it then plays perfectly, even 5.1 DD sound is retained(DTS does not work though).
I have done this and stored my files on a QNAP NAS and have been pleased with the results. The PS3's scaler works on these files also.

=So, you are saying that in order to play my ISO files I have to rip them (again) to vobs and then use DVDdecrypter in reauthor mode to convert to one vob and then the PS3 will stream them?
I think you can use DVD shrink to open files directly from your hard drive, not sure whether it works with ISO files though. I originally had all my DVDs stored on a Freecom media player, so they were stored in a Video.Ts format.
I used DVD shrink to re-author all of these in to a single file. One thing to mention is that you do lose the DVD menus.
Re-authoring each DVD takes about 10 minutes each .
Hope this helps.

hahaha, just put you had in the pocket and buy a decent streamer, i have a PS3 and they are crap for this. Whats the point of just MP4? i cant stand going through all the crap of converting, transferring, etc....
I just wanna play the damn thing after its downloaded!

I agree with this, i was going to plug my external hard drive into the PS3 so i could watch all my vids and then it only played 1% of them. There was no way i was going to sit down and convert a shedload of files to another format.
I wonder if they will extend the number of files it can read with future firmware releases. I dont ever expect to see divX supported on the PS3 tho.

 how can u tell ;)
The last i heard they wernt going to do it! Are they going to now?! Along with other formats?
Ive just started looking into a media streamer because from what ive heard the PS3 isnt the best tool for this particular job. Be brilliant if they finally support a wide range of formats. It will save me some money!

Pictures and music are fine although i havent found any way to search for the sng/artist/album i want you just have to scroll throught which takes AGES! If there is a way please correct me!
Video it playes mpeg2 but i think thats about it.
Im VERY sad to report it doesnt play AVI's :( and that is what 90% of my videos are stored as, i defo cant be bothered to convert some 500 files! I hope they sort this with a further firmware update! fingers crossed!
UPDATE:
When the PS3 actually reads the video (divX) and displays a picture of what it is, when you try and play it, you get a "data is corrupt" message! even tho it works fine on my comp. great!
yet another UPDATE:
I have read here (http://kotaku.com/gaming/hell-yes/divx-confirms-ps3-divx-support-322015.php) and here ("http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/hotness/ps3-is-getting-divx-ps3-is-getting-better-322003.php)
that the 2.00 version release will recognise DivX files without actually playing them. Then over the next few months we should see them actually playing!

Well all this is slighty interesting, STILL!!! PS3 aint a streamer. Personally i have so much more to do with my time than converting files!
If it cant paly VOB, TS, AVI and HD then its a waste of time for me!
I would rather have a dedicated streamer - to me the PS3 as a streamer is like a 14" portable TV, its ok, but i want to watch a film on my 50" Plasma!

I agree!
However 90% of my files (the ones i watch on a regular basis) are divx so when the PS3 has this function it will save me £200 on a media streamer, perfect for my personal situation!
I do hope some sort of search function will be added for music files though, it will take ages to find a particular song otherwise. I will have to see how long i can put up with that for before getting a dedicated streamer.
