Topfield 5800 question
I couldn't wait for the 5810 so caved in and ordered a 5800 the other day. (Don't have a spare HDMI port anyway!!)
The first thing I will want to do is add the mystuff TAP. Can you tell me if I need any special cable to do this update if all I have is a laptop?
For the Humax I had to buy a null modem cable and a USB convertor box to do updates!! What's the deal with the Toppy?

Re: Topfield 5800 question
You just need a USB cable type A to B. If I remember correctly it is the same as used when connecting a printer via USB to a PC...
All the required info is listed in chapter 5 of the manual for connecting to your PC.
Hope that helps.

Re: Topfield 5800 question
And the software to upload updates and TAP's is really very easy to use.

Re: Topfield 5800 question
What is the overall consensus for the best TAPs to apply to my new PVR? WIll mystuff do everything I need or are others recommended as well?

Re: Topfield 5800 question
MyStuff is very popular, and tends to do everything in one. Many other people prefer a combination of different TAPs instead.
The best thing may be to use it on its own for a while then see what you don't like, and look through the list of TAPs to work out which ones address your particular niggles.

Re: Topfield 5800 question
I use the following:
TAP Commander 1.0.2 | TF5000 Display 1.46 | UK Subtitle 1.7 | MyStuff 5.5 | eit2mei BETA 7.8m3 | Remote Extender 1.5 | Description Extender 2.21
Note that the TAPs listed after MyStuff are requisites for MyStuff to have full functionality and they are bundled with it.

\Mystuff comes with descriptin extender and remote extender anyway, it is by far and away the greatest TAP ever written.
I also have the TF5800 display TAP and its brilliant.
More about the version of Mystuff can be found here :

Not really. As I said, the last four all go together. The first is a controller for TAPs. Display is essential given the horrible Topfield display. And Subtitles I find essential, as I have no idea where they are hidden in the UI and I use them all the time.

Re: Topfield 5800 question
You also might take a look at SuperPIP tap to rid the Toppy of it's own awful incarnation.
The Display tap mentioned does provide much better functionality.... aka channel text amoungst other offerings but unfortunately the Toppy is limited to a 4 digit 8 segment display so some channels cannot be shown correctly. Designed for the TF5000 & made compatible for the TF5800 so doesn't quite live up to it's name. I'd reccomend it tho' just for the other features.

Re: Topfield 5800 question
Well I'm all set up with mystuff 5.5 on my new toppy now. I have a question about the EPG though. How do I force it to download the latest schedule for the week? Upon booting my old Humax it would tend to fill it up pretty quickly but after about 30 mins the Toppy's EPG schedule is still a bit patchy. e.g. I can only see the next two programmes on BBC1. I want to check though the whole week.
Strangely if I press the guide button 3 times I get the old cyan style menu and the EPG is showing there!!?

Re: Topfield 5800 question
That's an issue with MyStuff; the standard EPG fills pretty quickly. For reasons lost in the mists of time (and which I never understood), rather than reading that data directly, MyStuff relies on another TAP (eit2mei) to scan that periodically, and save it to a file, which MyStuff then reads. So until that process is complete, you don't get the full EPG in MyStuff.
More details in the MyStuff area of the Toppy site.

Re: Topfield 5800 question
At least I am not going mad then! In the mystuff settings I told it to scan at 2.30am for 60 minutes. Should that mean my EPG is kept up to date always?
Another quick question - on the Humax if I wanted to search by title for a programme I could just go into the guide and get a free text search - where is the equivalent on the Toppy? - I can't find it anywhere!

Re: Topfield 5800 question
There's a TAP called MEI Search that does that terribly well.
