View Full Version : Numpty needs help - EVA8000

I have a Yamaha nx600d receiver which has an ethernet port to accept streamed music and internet radio. I am in the process of putting my cds on disc using FLAC and EAC. I intend to purchase the QNAP T109 for storing all my media - initially music and photographs though with video to follow. I have seen the EVA 8000 advertised and wonder if this is the best option for completing my system via a wifi link to the QNAP which will be attached to my router located two floors above my receiver. Is a PS3 a suitable alternative? Or would it be best just to buy an ethernet bridge for audio and later a PS3 for photos/video etc.
I read the report on Trusted Reviews and was interested by the statement "The EVA8000 also has an http server built into it so you can control it from any Wi-Fi Internet ready device without the need to leave the TV switched on (handy if you have a Plasma), or log in remotely to set the PVR record functionality when you're away from home." I am a total numpty as far as anything technical is concerned. Could someone please explain how this works. Does it mean that I can sit on my settee with my TYTNII in hand and select which music track to play and see details of the music as it plays.
Secondly if I am streaming music and simultaneously viewing photos will the music stop or stutter each time I download a new photo?
Sorry if this is a dumb post!

A PS3 doesn't stream.
For purely music go and have a look at the www.sonos.com
Other than that your post is making my head hurt.

I read all over the place that it doesn't, or at least not from a NAS. They are wrong, I am wrong.
Send three and fourpence, we're going to a dance.

Nah, it does stream, I have used it to stream after turning on Windows Media Playing 'share my library' option. Not the greatest solution, and definitely wouldn't buy a PS3 purely for its streaming capability.

But once they've implemented Divx support it will be much better IMHO. Save me having to convert all my AVIs before I can stream them to it

Yep, Divx support (when or if it happens) will be great.

It's more a case of "when" than "if": http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/11/14/ps3-xbox-360-divx

The PS3 is a fully fledged streamer, very very good too - even does AVCHD out of the box.
If you use TVersity, it will be able to do your DIVx files too ;)

If you use TVersity rather than windows media connect, the XBOX360, PS3 and just every upnp streamer on the market will do Divx :)

A cheaper (and better IMO) option is the Squeezebox

Aha! BUT you're assuming we all use windows-based PCs as our streaming host. :nono:
You really must get yourself a NAS, autopilot ;)

OK, my choice of weapon is marshmallows. My second will attend yours at dawn.
I know that PS3 plays AVCHD but sadly it won't play .iso's natively with full menu, will it?
'Tis a huge tall beast too.

From what I've read, yes you can use a web browser to view what the EVA is playing. You can also control it via the browser but that's just a bonus feature - it will be far easier to control it via the remote, and far easier to see what's playing by viewing its display on a TV screen.
Secondly if I am streaming music and simultaneously viewing photos will the music stop or stutter each time I download a new photo?
No, according to the review I read music won't stutter when you're viewing photos. That said, if you have a really bad wireless connection (assuming you're not using wired) then it's possible you could get stuttering. Under adequate (or even moderately poor) conditions it should be fine though.
