iphone & NTL email
Anyone else had problems getting NTL email to work with their nice new shiny iphone? Any advice on getting it set up to work will be very greatly received

Re: iphone & NTL email
NTL Based email is most likely like most Cable ISP operator not allowing for SMTP access outside their network. As such you should use the incoming connection using the NTL Mail details for POP3 and outgoing the O2 SMTP details....That should make it work....

Re: iphone & NTL email
It may be that there's something wrong with how you've set it up, but: It's unusual to stop you collecting mail from elsewhere, but quite usual to stop you sending it except when connected via your ISP (NTL). iPhone checks both when you set up the account.
You can create free gmail account and forward you email to that if NTL really don't you collect your mail.
You can also send via your gmail account from anywhere. With gmail you can set a "custom FROM header" to make it appear (approximately) that the mail you send came from your NTL email account, and to cause replies to go to the NTL account.

Re: iphone & NTL email
Not that it really helps your problem, but I've always used ntl email.
The mailbox size is about 10 meg (unless it's changed) which has been a problem in the past.
Before I got my iphone I setup a googlemail account and went into my ntl webmail and set it to forward all mails to the googlemail account.
Now I've made the break from ntl, changed all websites that use my email and emailed my contacts.
Using thunderbird to view the mail on my PC and the iphone and as imap is enabled it's all in sync.
Make the break from your isp email.

Re: iphone & NTL email
Have just set up a gmail account as I was having trouble sending an email through ntl. I have set outlook up to forward email to my gmail, which works fine, I wanted to use the "send mail as" function so when I send using gmail it looks like I am sending from ntl. If I log into my account using safari it works ok, but if I use the mail application it will show the email was sent from gmail. Anyway that I get the mail app to do the same thing as the webmail?
Cheers

Re: iphone & NTL email
My NTL account synced immediately.
Have you set up the POP and SMTP details correctly?
POP = NTL settings
SMTP = O2 settings

Re: iphone & NTL email
Guys you all seem a bit wrong... Im with NTL and have no issues using the iphone across 3g or WIFI.
The codes are:
POP: pop.ntlworld.com
SMTP smtp.ntlworld.com
Make sure SSL is off.
USe port 110 for incoming
Use port 25 for the SMTP

you can't do push email with gmail. I think only exchange and mobileme do push.
Just set it to check every hour to save your battery

Just to clarify, I wasn't saying it couldn't be done.
I've ditched them and gone with googlemail as I want to be able to get my mail from my pc and from my iphone using imap (so if i've read it on one it's marked as read on the other).
NTL's mailbox size is very small (about 10 meg last time I checked but this may have changed). googlemail gives you a few gb to store your emails.
I've set my ntl account to forward to googlemail while I phase it out.
Phil

Re: iphone & NTL email
You can fetch your email from any pop3 account over 3g but to send it you have to use the o2 smtp server. if you dont when you send over 3g it gives you some "invaild recipents address" error.
the sever is smtp.0o2.co.uk
the user name is what every they gave you to access your accout with "@o2.co.uk" on the end
and the password is the same.
take a look here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306986
