I'm looking at buying a Transporter and will use NAS. I don't need a $2000 box with raid 5 -6. All I need is a 1 or 2 disk simple arrangement. Perhaps raid 1 would be nice but not important. There are various boxes like the Linksys NAS200 and DLink DNS313 / 323.... that's the sort of thing I'm looking for... but the Linksys has a very poor writeup.. Netgear make a box that is supposed to be the business...

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

I suggest you try the Hard Drives and Memory board over in the Computing section.

Netgear just bought a company called Infrant, which is what I use. Plenty of suggestions on that and others there, though.

If you're getting a Transporter I think that you'll be needing a bit of space to rip to a good quality. Unless you actually enjoy reripping music for days/weeks on end after your hard drive's crashed, I would suggest RAID 1 at a minimum.

I've got a Qnap 109 and an very happy with it - this is a single disk fanless unit. Qnap do multidisk raid versions as well, have Twonky built in to the firmware and Slimserver preinstalled when ordered with disk(s). Even the 109 can run an extra esata or usb disk in a raid 1-type arrangement.

I can recommend the Synlology DS 207+ (http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sansdigital/ds207/). Its not the cheapest you'll find- but the functionality it comes bundled with is top drawer. The backup functionality and ability to download torrents directly to the nas were key-selling-points to me; but the thing Ive been most impressed with is the regularity of the firmware updates and support.

One to consider.

I use a Synology DS101j (PATA) with a 500GB HDD (no fan) and a Synology DS101g (SATA) with a 500GB HDD (this box has a fan).

I also have a little Asus WL-HDD2.5 notebook wireless PATA NAS. Cute little thing with a 160GB HDD just for music. Discontinued now and not replaced.

I just did research for the question on this thread and ended up ordering the QNAP 209 Pro from www.newegg.com . The plain 209 would probably have been fine too, but the their deal on the Pro with the 500GB hard drive thrown in, was too good to pass up. Will pick it up when I go home for christmas and avoid the customs tax nonsense.

You were lucky Osamede. They are out of stock and seem to have dropped the hard drive offer. If you are knowledgeable about these things, can you tell me what the difference between the pro and regular one is? It seems to be linux support and microsoft AB (from memory), but what does that actually mean?

Cheers.

I am no expert, but according to the above, there is basically no difference for 99% of people.

As far as I know the QNAP 209 is l Linux box itself. I think the NFS support is more relevant to corporate situations, but from what I understand the 209 will do ust fine for anyone at hom needing to stream music or video. I only went for the 209 Pro because of the pricing with the HDD included. But $322 for the plain 209 is also a strong price and this review ( www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30145/170/ ) plus comments on several forums sold me on it.
