The supplied ones as they have the microphone in it so I don't have to unplug the headset when a call comes in.....When fitted properly to ones ears they are actually rather good I think..

The Shure adapter is already on sale in the UK Apple stores but costs £39.95 which is unfair when the Americans can buy for $39.95

I used my CX300s on mine, just cut a bit of the plastic away so the fit nicely.

Sounded great and no adaptor or longer wires needed. :smashin:

I have shure e4c and they are absolutely amazing. Although they are no longer the current model they are rated by several sources as better than their replacement - you can still get them in some places at a discount.

I've have also been looking for a decent set of headphones for my iPhone, preferably with an integrated mic. to duplicate the functions of the supplied Apple "ear buds" (WHICH ARE ACTUALLY A LOT BETTER THAN THEY USED TO BE, BOTH IN TERMS OF COMFORT AND SOUND QUALITY).

As someone with a preference for On-Ear (rather than In-Ear) designs, I have been considering the Bose on-ear: http://www.bose.co.uk/GB/en/home-entertainment/personal-audio/headphones/bose-audio-headphones/bose-on-ear-headphones/index.jsp
in combination with the aforementioned Shure MPA:
http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Accessories/CasesAdapters/us_pa_MPA_phone_adapter
I then noticed a new headset on the Bose US website called a Mobile On-Ear Headset, which combines the functions of BOTH:
http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/home_entertainment/headphones_headsets/headsets/mobile_oe/index.jsp
Unfortunately, when I phoned Bose UK, they had no idea when it would be available over here!

I also like the fact that one press on the microphone pauses the song, and two quick presses skips the song, great for when you have all your songs on shuffle and you're just not in the mood for that particular one.

Wow - thanks for that tip, didnt realise they did that! Maybe I should take a look at some instructions somewhere.

OK I’ve had my UK iPhone from the day of launch, and overall I have been very happy with it. In fact my one and only bugbear with it (apart from the lack of 3g) are the diabolical ear bud/ phones it is supplied with. To be fair, I think they are an improvement over earlier Apple ear buds, but they still sound uninspiring. The main issue though is that on my busy commute on public transport, sound leakage (both inwards and outwards) is atrocious. In order to hear the music over the background noise, I have to crank the volume up to maximum, which is deafening for me and irritating to my fellow passengers.
On my previous iPods, I have simply replaced the supplied buds with decent third party headphones. Unfortunately there are not many headphones available that both:

i) Fit the iPhone’s recessed socket (without an adapter)
ii) Incorporate a microphone in the lead

I should also point out that I have never liked in-ear designs, preferring on-ear or even over-ear types. OK I know large “cans” can look rather silly on public transport; but to me sound quality is everything!

Shure make the MPA (Music Phone Adapter) lead which goes between the iPhone and your existing headphones. The problem with this is that the headphones require a very short lead to position the microphone in the right place. With many headphone leads being constructed of independently insulated multi-strand cable, cutting and re- soldering is not an option.

http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Accessories/CasesAdapters/us_pa_MPA_phone_adapter

Bose make iPhone compatible “Communications Kits” for a number of their existing phones (plus a new version of the On-Ear model) all incorporating inline microphones - although (unlike the MPA) I do not believe they incorporate pause/ next track buttons. As I currently own a pair of Bose QC2 noise cancelling headphones, these seemed the obvious choice. Unfortunately they are not available in the UK and Bose UK have no idea when they will be. Luckily I was able to source a Comms Kit on EBay (currently awaiting delivery)

I have a set of Shure E500s, and I am struggling to find an MPA-3C to use them with my iPhone. The modular design of the Shure's is very cool, and the MPA looks great, but I can't find any shop in Europe with one in stock, or any US dealers with stock who will ship to the UK. :-(

I believe all UK Apple Stores stock them. The Lakeside branch certainly had them on 9th November. What annoys me is the price of £39.99 (they are $39.99 in the US)

Odd' I've just checked the UK Apple Website and it is not listed (although it is still on the US site)!

You could use your tripods (sic) for listening to music etc (although you will probably need an adapter to fit the iPod's socket), but when the phone rings, you will have to "pull the plug" in order to speak!

Amazes me Apple have released a phone with such a strong multimedia capability and not put a "Standard" 3.5mm socket on it that you can use with your own headphones without butchering the jack or using an Adaptor.

Just as bad as Sony Ericsson

I'd imagine they are hoping it will force some uses to only buy Apple's headphones.

apple do seem to be developing a "Greedy" streak. Just look at the way they have insisted on a cut of the operator's contract profits.

Sorry going off topic now.

Hi,
I will soon be getting a nice new Iphone for a prezzie
As a past owner of Ipods I have always upgraded to some decent headphones. What are the supplied buds like with the Iphone? I guess as per usual they are not that great. However I like the idea of having the built in mic to take calls. I have found these (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=E27B8E5E&fnode=home/shop_iphone/iphone_accessories/headsets&nplm=TP637) on the Apple store which look nice and have the built in mic feature.
Has anyone tried these? Are they any good? Or is there a better alternative around? Thanks for any help.
Cheers, Rich

Shure are doing an adaptor, the MPA-3C, which is designed to make any Shure earphones work as an iPhone headset - it includes the microphone and control button as well as an iPhone compatible 3.5mm jack. About $40 or £40 in the UK. Should also work with non-Shure earphones (but if you aren't using Shures, you really should be... ;-) )

Time to resurrect an older thread.

I haven't even tried the supplied Apple earphones as I prefer the in ear canal type for isolation of outside noise, sound clarity and also out of respect to others as they emit less to the outside world (e.g. that annoying tinny cymbal sound leak).

So this is what I would like to see in a replacement set;

- Headphone socket connection rather than dock connector.

- In ear canal design.

- Ability to skip tracks as SeedyR says above (so same control as Apple earphones).

- Noise cancelling microphone for phone call sound quality.

The two main ones I've seen so far are the v-moda vibe duo's, but I've read that the mic on those picks up a lot of the surrounding noise during calls.

v-moda vibe duo (http://www.v-moda.com/collection/modaphones/vibe%20duo.aspx)

Secondly the Etymotic Research hf2, although I've read those are a little light on bass.

Etymotic Research hf2 (http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/hf2.aspx)

So does anyone have these and use them with the iPhone and if so, what's your thoughts please?

There must be others I should be considering too?

Finally, I'd also look at a mic / remote option such as the Shure MPA mentioned in the previous post so I could continue with my existing earphones, but it would need to have a decent noise cancelling mic and I've read the Shure offering does have a problem with background noise on calls.

Thanks in advance for any comments. I can't be the only one looking for this solution / criteria.

Cheers.

Not used either of those but do have a set of Etymotic ER6i - these too were commented on as being a bit bass light - what I would say though its that they are tone neutral and rather than being bass light, they just don't emphasise the bass. If the track has a decent bassline - they'll produce it.

I'm more than happy with mine mate (much prefer their sound to a pair of Sennheiser CX300s I had) - and I'm pretty fussy with my music reproduction :)
