Good luck to 'em. All the better for guys like us who realise that region 2 discs generally stink because we are not as rich/fortunate as the Americans.
It's a shame that selling region 1 discs in this country is illegal. Don't support this crap law by 'pointing' out anyone who does.

many trading standards offices are giving people the go ahead to do this if they put bbfc classification stickers on them, even though that doesn't make them any more legal than leaving them as is. apparently they've been letting many rental shops stock R1 dvds as well. it's ridiculous that trading standards are not only turning a blind eye to crime, but actually telling people they are allowed to do it. makes a mockery of the whole system.
i, by the way, manage a rental shop. i heard about this the other day and will be enquiring with my local TSO to see what they have to say about it - tough i have no plans to rent them.
i believe movietyme have been told the same, which is why their turnaround specials have bbfc stickers on, as they are shipping those from within the UK, which is technically illegal buut they have the go ahead from trading standards. while i like the next day service i have a serious problem with their position (Trading standards that is). if they feel it is OK to flout the law in this case what is next?

i'd love to know what the BBFC think of people using their classification stickers on unclassified, foreign material. Trading standards may not be bothered (which I find highly unlikely anyway) but you can be certain the BBFC will be.
And as for that shop in Nottingham exploiting people, how come? You recognise that they are charging over-the-odds prices and yet you still paid them.

Sooner or later they'll get raided by FACT, Which is just what happened to Laser Enterprises, Which had a shop quite close to where I live. Discussed HERE (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15900&highlight=laser+enterprises)

thing is FACT work had in hand with local trading standards, and IF they've given to go ahead the FACT will have no reason to go near them. plus i'd hope FACT would concentrate on illegal copies before worrying about legitimate imports (allbeit tehnically illegal ones)
also would FACT - Federation Against Copyright Theft (for those that don't know) - even have anything to do with the process. while there are technical copyright breeches due to the discs being sold outside of their specified regions, i doubt they'd care. so it would come back to the trading standards office.
in grand givermental style i have recieved no reply yet to my enquiry to the TSO round here, but i'll let everyone know the outcome when i do, or if i get anything more concrete on any local authorities giving the go ahead.

As a ripped off consumer living in the UK, I hope you fail! Bring on the R1! The Law should concentrate on the Pirated stuff, as you said.

Yep, They never seem to have every item in every shop that's advertised in the catalogue, yet it's not illegal to be out of stock of the advertised items, as long as there is at least one in stock when the catalogue goes to press.
that's what I've been told anyway.
I now await a response from Nick halliday who is a forum member
& is quite a high up in the RS organisation (responsible for buying AFAIK)
I've have been fortnate when I've been to RS to buy something in the past except for a CD player I wanted to buy last year, In the end I bought a new sub instead.

had a nice chat with the trading standards guy today, told him about an article in our trade mag about retal shops claiming they have been given the go ahead by trading standards, and mentioned there were a number of stores (gave no names, so cinema store may be safe for a while yet) that were openly selling them, also with apparent permission from TS.
(failed to mention movietyme's next day service, which uses the same BBFC sticker method, maybe because i like using it :) )
he assures me that it is still very illegal, he had a word with someone at the BBFC, they're not happy, and he is interested in finding out if lazy trading standards officers have been giving the go ahead, cause they bloody well shouldn't. he's also been in touch with the magazine, and they're putting together an article with the facts (no pun intended) to make everyone know that this is still a very naughty thing to do and they won't be nice to people who are trying to get away with it.
looks like i've stirred up a poo storm! could be some trading standards officers with some slapped wrists, not to mention shops.
and there was my boss getting all excited that he'd be able to start selling R1's at a ridiculous mark up.
