Having always been a collector of things, it never occurred to me that other home cinema enthusiasts would not all own large amounts of DVDs.
I now realise that many people buy discs to watch once, then trade them on. This clearly has many advantages, such as low cost and no chance of being stuck with a huge amount of obsolete software when a new format comes along.
Despite this I still prefer to have my collection at hand as I rarely know until the last minute what I fancy watching.

I know we probably all do a little of both, but are you mostly a trader or a collector?

I'm a collector then I guess, although I don't really like the word as it has connotations of collecting just for the sake of it. I'm like you in that I don't know what I want to watch until the last minute so I like to keep everything on hand. But I trade on what I know I will never watch again, even if I enjoyed it the first time round, and I trade on when I want to replace the same title with another region or an SE. Thankfully, one man's poison is another man's meat :)

Collector.

I like to have movies that I really enjoy / appreciate on my shelf as I often like to dig out an old favourite.

I go along with Squirrel though, that I wouldn't describe myself as a true collector as I dont buy the disks just to say 'look what I've got'.

If I dont think i'd watch a movie again withing the foreseable future then I trade it on. As my 'collection' has grown (about 230 now) i've found myself weeding out a lot of the chaff, so to speak.

Its my intention that the disks should be my 250 (or so) faveourite movies and so as new disks are released and/or my tastes change I find myself removing the less appreciated disks to make space for the incoming.

Definately a collector....but not just for the hell of it! I only buy what I like and is of interest for me......with a few minor exceptions.. I have watched all DVD's I have many times over and still love 'em!

An example of one of the exceptions....(sorry squirrel) Donnie Darko!

Still, I cant be annoyed with the idea of trying to sell or trade them on so I just keep them or give them on to someone else in the family who may be more interested.....

I prefer to just collect them. My collection is still fairly small - 80, but these are all films I will watch again. Got a long way to go to get all the films I want. I would trade discs that are gonna be replace with special editions but that's about it.

Hi,

Definitely a collector for me, as well, until I'm short of cash, and then I sell - but only if I have to. (Maybe you should have a fourth option - "Hoarder"!)

Neither. I am an accumulator as I don't "collect" dvds in the traditional sense of the word but I rarely trade them either as I can't be bothered with all the hassle that goes with it.

Collector, having never traded, but again, I am very picky what I buy.
I don't own that many DVDs.

Another collector but more of a renter really. I have a smallish collection of DVD's, god if I had all the films i've seen over the years I'd need to house them in the British Libary. Somehow my collection seem to comprise of a lot of old rubbish, Oh Baby.

I collect them, I have about 320 at the moment. I have only just found these forums and it looks quite good, people here seem to have a good sense of humour. I will have a quick shuftie in the trading forums, see if anything takes my fancy.

Thanks

I have only got 20 dvds at the moment. I like the idea of trading though as I dont have a lot of spare cash.

I'm a collector too - however my collection is entirely made up from trades so how should I vote .

Collector I suppose I just buy to watch in the correct aspect ratio, picture quality and sound.
I only bought one DVD that I had not viewed the film before and that was The Mummy which I bought at the same time as buying my player as it got fantastic reviews for the picture quality.

I only rent dvd's. I forgot to take one back once so I suppose I'm a collector. If something came along I might trade it. I'm totally confused. :(

Collecting DVDs is not so much a choice, but a compulsion. I need to buy DVDs.

Must buy more DVDs, must buy more DVDs...

Collector - although in a small time way compared to many of you good people (doffs hat in direction of SG et al).

Have only traded one DVD - a Bond that needed to go to make way for the 19 disc set in the tin!

I am currently resisting the compulsion to buy until my credit card bill has been cleared.

I collect all mine and donīt trade any (not even the duff ones!). I like to build up a decent amount of dvds so I can have a greater choice of what to watch.:)

Since it seems fashionable to dust off old threads, I found this one.

In January I would have said collector - who in their right mind would want the fuss of trading dvds that they had purchased to lovingly watch and then place on their shelf to be taken down once in a while for dusting.

How mad I was - Since then I have traded / sold off about 50 discs, including some I'd be ashamed to own, that I know I'd never watch again & I've seen discs I'd never have seen (I even enjoyed some of them)

So now I'm firmly a collector / trader - I have a much higher percentage of films that I want on my shelf even though I probably have less than I did in January. I'm also spending less money than I was but seeing more movies. AND I felt able to buy titles like Six Feet Under (missed the first series) knowing that I'd be able to sell it on and not have to pay Ģ50 for the priviledge of catching up.

Anyone else had the "Road to Damascus experience"? (St Paul NOT George Bush)
