Okay so I waited to get my iPhone and Im loving it to bits. I have no intention to unlock it as I happy the way it is. Of course If I want custom ringtones I will have to pay and im happy to do this. BUT I cant find anywhere in iTunes how to create one. Im using the latest 7.5 iTunes and there is a ringtone tab but no way of creating one.

Is it me or has this feature been removed for the UK iTunes?

I'm having the same problem. iTunes will tell me it can't use my ripped songs, but those that I bought from the iTunes Store I can't create a ringtone from either, it just says it cannot connect to the store to do it.

Its only certain purchased songs. There is supposed to be a column in the view that indicates this, but I cant find it. Ive looked in the view settings where I can switch on the size, length, etc but no ringtone column. I have the latest iTunes with a UK account.

I can show the ringtone column but in the UK store there are no songs in the top 50 songs that are available for ringtones ... if i switch to the uS store there are about 15 out of the top 50 ... guess it still hasn't been switched on in UK - probably due to the impoverished bleeding heart record companies crying 'not fair' !!

I'd use ambrosia's itoner software http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/utilities/itoner/ if you are mac-based and make my own !!

I believe any AAC under 30 seconds and renamed to .m4r will be imported as ringtones now in iTunes 7.5 so no need for iToner et al.

Intrigued by Itoner. Glad there are happy experiences.

Does anyone know if, once the ringtone has been created, does it become unuseable when Apple update the next software. - I'm using an official, non hacked UK iPhone.

Alternatively, I don't mind paying iTunes for a ringtone, I have a need for a "silent" one so I can hear some calls coming in but not others.

There seems to be an issue with iTunes ringtones - I've not found any yet, despite clicking the view button "view ringtones"

I get the column with the little bell (although it's annoying to have to do the above for each artist search) Any one found any artists' songs that can be
used?

Thanks

As JD20 mentioned earlier, for some reason the combination of iTunes 7.5 and iPhones using the latest 1.1.2 firmware allows you to use custom ringtones again. You dont have to mess around with programs, just take any .m4a file (under 30secs ish) and rename it to .m4r , then double click it and iTunes will import it into your ringtones folder and you can then sync them to your phone.

I use a little free editing program called 'Wavepad' on windows to chop out the bits I want from an .mp3, then save the file as .m4a and bobs your uncle......

You must be missing a step or not exporting it correctly....It would help to state exactly what you are doing so we might be able to help you spot where you go wrong...You are on version 1.1.2 of the iPhone aren't you?

Ah are you using windows? Don't know how it works on that....MP4 could be a container, you could save it in all sorts of formats in there that may/may-not be compatible....Hence on Quicktime Pro I use the "Movie - iPhone" setting....

What's the best way to increase the output volume of custom ringtones, some of them are too quiet even with the iPhone volume at max.

Any sound editor can do that, though its not on my agenda since I can't have my iPhone much louder than half way 4 as it will become so loud that it starts distorting...

Here are the exact steps I followed to get custom ringtones on my iPhone. I am using iTunes 7.5 (19) and iPhone firmware version 1.1.2. My system is a imac with Leopard installed.
Select the song in iTunes that I want to use as a ringtone. Protected AAC files will not work.
Right-click on the song and select Get Info
Go to the Options page and select the start and end times for the ringtone
Right-click on the song again and select Convert Selection to AAC
Right-click on the converted song and select Show in Finder
Drag the .m4a file from the Finder window to your desktop
Go back to iTunes and delete the converted song from iTunes. When I skipped this step, double clicking on the .m4r file to import the ringtone into iTunes did not work properly.
Right-click on the song file on your desktop, select Get Info and change the file extension from .m4a to m4r. You should get a warning message about changing the extension.
Open a Finder window and locate the Ringtones folder underneath your iTunes folder. The path should be /Users/<your ID>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones. If this folder does not exist, create it.
Drag the renamed song file from your desktop to the Ringtones folder in Finder.
Double-click on the .m4r file now stored inside the Ringtones folder. iTunes should change to the Ringtones folder under Library near the top and start playing the ringtone
Plug-in your iPhone to begin the sync process. This should copy the ringtone over to your iPhone. You can verify this after the sync is complete by expanding the iPhone contents inside iTunes and then, selecting the Ringtones folder.

Now, after doing the sync step above, I still did not have a Custom category under Settings | Sounds | Ringtone on my iPhone. I suspect that "something" must be done to get this to appear (like purchasing and syncing a ringtone for instance). So, to work around this, I downloaded, installed and ran the trial version of iToner. After doing one sync from within iToner, the Custom category showed up on my iPhone.

A few unneccessary steps there. Upon the first save of the selection just immediately change the extension to a ringtone and save it on the desktop. Then there is no need to Copy using finder. Just either double click to import in iTunes or drag to iTunes. Please note you should see the QuickTime icon with ring written in it which is the first clue you have made a proper file.

On the iPhone just go to settings select sounds and don't forget to scroll up. Custom is already there no need to buy anything or use any kind of third party tool.

You got to make certain the ringtone is less than 30 seconds.

For those using a hacked phone there is a great app called Sendsong" that once installed on the iPhone allows you to select any song you have on the phone and set it as a ringtone. It does't sync back to iTunes as a tone but who cares.

You don't have to mess around with any of the file chopping, renaming copying, etc. You simply select any song from your phone, add to Ringtones and then go and select it from the Ringtone list in Settings. Easy.

yes your ring tone worked fine

I cant seem to get rid of the .m4a extention.
I right click the file and rename as xxxxx.m4r
is this the correct way to do it or is there a different way

using xp

paraponte

dejongjay is quite correct

Thanks for your help.

Windows users do this:

Windows explorer
Tools
View
Uncheck the box which hides file extensions & click apply
using wavepad or similar, chop your tune to less than say 30 seconds

rename it with .m4r
double click and it becomes a ringtone!!!
thanks Dj:):hiya:

Hey I am glad it worked, sending the file through with the double extension triggered the solution in my mind....I must admit that is normally one of the first settings I changed in XP before I do anything....

Thanks for the Grolsch :)

Can you not just use a prog like mp3splitter to make your own ringtones?

Can you not just use a prog like mp3splitter to make your own ringtones?

don't know mp3splitter. You can Ise any tool you like as long as you end up with a compliant m4a file that you can rename. What I highlighted were tools that everyone with iTunes and iPhone already have installed. There is no need for special tools unless you really want to!

how do you rename a file to M4r?

Apple OS-X: Highlight file and press Apple+I
Windows XP: Right click and select rename

Please note that in Windows XP there is a big change that you have switched off the display of extensions for known files, so you'll need to enable that first if it does not work. See earlier in this post...or search as it has been described a few time...

In the UK you cannot officially purchase a ringtones till December 2007, this is from apple support, thought it took 10 phone calls to get this information out of them. This is not on and i was not told this by apple when I bought it. Can anyone clearly explain step by step how to create a ringtone. I run a osx 10.4.11 on a mac book pro and do not have quicktime pro as it costs money.

Apple need to sort out this ringtone service or make it clear when they sell you the phone.

oh dont be daft. You are happy to pay money for an iTunes track and then pay it again to have only 30 seconds of it, yet you dont pay for QuickTime pro because it costs money! Really dont get some people.

I am not going to explain it again as that has been done many a time. There are many free alternatives to edit sound files as well. Many have been named another would be GarageBand installed on every mac. Windows have many as well just search for it.

hope this helps.

ps you can also edit all songs to the section you want

Take a look at the other advice provided as you probably haven't really changed the extension to .m4r but the hidden .m4a is still behind....That is assuming you use XP.....Or....you didn't have an appropriate file in the first place, changing the extension won't do anything....You know you have got it when the icon is iTunes with Ring written in it.....
