iPhone 3G

Currently the iPhone 3G CANNOT be unlocked for use with non-iPhone sim cards, however it can be jailbroken to use 3rd Party applications by using the Pwnage Tool program for the Mac or WinPwn for the PC.

1st Gen iPhone with Firmware 2.0

1st Gen iPhone with Firmwares 1.1.4 and below

There is an historical Unlocking Thread here which discusses the different Unlocking and Jailbreaking methods: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=639530

iPhone terminology
Jailbreak = Open the iPhone to install 3rd party applications
Activate = Activate all functions except for the phone
Unlock = Unlock the phone for any sim card

3G
The fastest current form of mobile Data Transfer, this is only available on iPhone 3G, not with the 1st Gen iPhone. If you are in a 3G area you will see the 3G icon where your data icon is shown.

EDGE
EDGE is not a magic iphone data program, it is just a faster version of O2's standard GPRS service. If you are in a GPRS area you will have a solid square as your data icon, if you are in an EDGE are this will automatically change to a square with an E in it. If your GPRS is working it will switch to EDGE automatically where there is coverage. EDGE settings for unlocked iphones are below.

WiFi
You do NOT get charged for using your own WiFi.

The Cloud WiFi access
Free Cloud access is only available to people on official iphone O2 contracts.

MobileMe

If you have questions about setup, settings, problems you have encountered or otherwise please discuss in this thread - there are also APN settings for all UK carriers below.

1st Gen iPhone advice - this does NOT apply to the iPhone 3G

If you want to use an O2 PAYG or non-iphone contract sim card
You only have to jailbreak the phone, you do NOT need to do anything else the iphone will automatically be set up to use the O2 GPRS/EDGE service. The only iphone function you will not be able to use is Visual Voicemail.

If you want to use a non O2 sim card
You will have to unlock the phone and manually enter your networks Data settings (please search the forum there is threads covering all networks already) under Settings/General/Network/EDGE. The only iphone function you will not be able to use is Visual Voicemail. Please note that the iphone does NOT work with sim cards for the 3 network.

Pwnage Tool
In what is probably the biggest iphone unlocking news since AnySim appeared many moons ago the iPhone Dev Team have released Pwnage Tool for the Mac which has now also been ported to Windows under the guise of winpwn.

Previous unlocking and jailbreaking tools have relied on using "exploits" in the iphone firmware to allow the phone to be unlocked and custom applications to be launched from the iphone springboard. Pwnage tool is completely different in that it modifies the iphones bootloader and allows custom unsigned firmwares to be uploaded and run on the iphone. It is also fixes the downgraded baseband and no wifi issues caused by ziphone and is completely reversible so if anything goes wrong with your phone and you need to get it fixed under warranty you can go back to the OOTB state.

This is a much "cleaner" unlocking process as all the changes are done to the actual program prior to it being loaded onto the phone, it also opens the doors for completely custom firmwares to be loaded onto the iphone - expect to see a version of iphone linux shortly....

There is a great FAQ and guide here (http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36686)

The other most popular unlocking solutions are:

ziphone
ziphone is a program which can unlock and jailbreak ALL versions (upto the current 1.1.4 firmware) of the iphone whether they are OOTB or previously unlocked or jailbroken.

Google ziphone for Windows or Mac and Download
Plug your iphone in and sync with itunes to backup your contacts, music, etc.
Select Restore in itunes and restore to 1.1.4 firmware
Run ziphone "do it all" and wait for 4 minutes until complete
Select restore iphone from backup in itunes to get back your settings
Sync with itunes to get back your Music and Contacts

Hey presto - an unlocked and jailbroken iphone

This method does downgrade the 4.6 bootloader to 3.9 which stops the locate function in Google Maps from working but if you install "Locate Me" from the installer icon this gets it working again. There are also other issues with ziphone including wifi which sometimes does not work therefore we suggest all new unlocks are down with Pwnage Tool.

iLiberty+
Very similar to ziphone but seems to have a few less "issues", this is our current Windows unlocking recommendation before winpwn appears.

All unlocking solutions have risks and all unlocking is done entirely at your own risk!

Will O2 brick or block my unlocked iphone or throw me in jail?
No, it is not illegal for you to unlock an iphone - if it was we wouldnt be discussing it here!
