Are you allowed to transfer your dvds to a media server (with a large hard drive) as long as you keep your original?
If not then whats the point of having media servers or home cinema pcs?
If there is copy protection on the media, then it is there for a reason................
It is not permitted to discuss means of circumventing copy protection systems for the purposes of making a copy.
If the material is copyright then you have NO legal rights to copy it onto a hard disc or otherwise. Any more than copying a CD for use in your car, onto a cassette (does anyone still use those?) etc etc.

Thanks for the reply Nigel but there are hundreds of posts on this forum that discuss peoples dvd collections that they have copied to their hard drives as VOB files and IFOS etc, with people asking the best way to do it, the best server for it and best hard drives etc and they have all been allowed, so I am a little confused why these have never been removed.
Feel free to delete my topic if you feel I am breaking rules (and I apologise if I am).

What LV426 says is right - it's a really grey area.
The situation in the UK is, well, just weird really. Actually making MP3's from your CD's to play on your iPod is illegal - that's right, using iTunes is illegal and in fact Apple, Microsoft, Sony etc all produce and promote software that's actually illegal to use and actively aids people to partake in illegal activities.
The situation in the UK is madness, there was an article in yesterdays Guardian newspaper about this exact subject of using your media with streamers etc. Blatant discussion and promotion of copyright infringement will have to be avoided, but other wise just use you common sense :smashin:

I think we should be allowed to discuss this on the forum, lets face who does not make copies of their kids dvd's so they don't trash the original or rip it to a computer/server so it can be watched without them getting their hands on it. We should discuss what goes on in the real world. If i buy a DVD it's mine to do with as i please, i ain't renting it so if i stick it onto a server thats my business and i think people in this country should be more aggressive towards the goverment / corporations so as to get that right legally. Companies have had it all their own way for to long.

I think this is only in the UK. I live in France and here it is perfectly legal to make a copy/burn a dvd for private use, good old consumer rights.. I can post info on burning on a French site, but not a UK one presumably, which then leads you into defining what is a UK site. Where the servers are physically housed I presume....vive la difference, but personally I agree, the English are too docile.

And after all, what we mostly do here is talk about doing things. And since when (with a few very notable exceptions) did it become illegal to talk about things?
I can talk about bank robbery - which is illegal; I can talk about demonstrating within 800 metres of the Houses of Parliament.
Etcetera.

Actually you cant as the planning of an illegal act is in certain circumstances illegal. If you wanted to store lots of foortage of your kids shot on a DVD camcorder to a server to watch how would you do that?

Yes, I can. I didn't say I was planning anything. Just talking about it. There is a big difference between talking about something and planning to do it.
And I'd not have been so foolish as to have bought them a DVD camcorder in the first place. Tape is much more versatile.

There are a number of download programs around that will allow one to rip dvd's to hard drive. Do a 'search'. ie Slysoft.

Many of you guys seem to be missing the point here. Whether we should be allowed to talk about such things on this forum or not has little to do with the law or whether we personally think it's right or wrong to do so. It's down to the forum rules. If the forum admin don't want it being discussed then they have every right to delete posts or ban people that think the rules don't apply to them.
The same way that if a restaurant want to impose a "dress code" then who are we to start complaining if we disagree with it? If you want to eat your meal wearing just a pair of Speedo trunks and flip-flops then fine. Just don't expect to be able to do so in all establishments!
There's no shortage of forums already openly discussing all sorts of things and so all we'd be doing was repeating what is already available elsewhere. Google for them.
As an aside this company (http://www.kaleidescape.com/products/) has had its fair share of court appearances for doing the exact same thing that many of us are doing, or thinking of doing ;)
