Dell True Colour E248WFP

well, after waiting for so long and not knowing what to go for i decided to take the plunge and ordered the new Dell E248WFP, i had the samsung 226cw but took it back due to blurring text and a faulty power socket, i had then decided on the Dell 2407 WFP-HC but due to all the problems with ghosting etc i decided against it.

well, the new monitor turned up yesterday (would've been here Tuesday but was at work and courier needed signature) contents were well packed and it comes with a tilt adjustable stand (so many seem to come with a fixed stand, which imo, is a complete pain) both a DVI and a VGA cable plus power lead and a Dell CD containing setup guide etc. No drivers or calibration software on CD which would've been nice, anyway booted up the computer after connecting with DVI cable, initial impression was wow, bit bright but after playing with settings got them to my liking, (will probably look for some software to calibrate it at a later date)

It's a large monitor obviously, but looks a lot bigger than the 22" samsung i had, set the resolution to the max and to be honest, the text is fine, no blurriness i noticed with the samsung, nice and crisp, so onto trying it with gaming, which is what i do a lot of, and must say that so far i'm impressed, good vibrant colours, haven't noticed any ghosting whilst playing yet nor any backlight bleed, (have tried CoD 4 demo, TF2, HL2 episode 2, DoD, various demo movies and am well happy so far)

It's reasonably priced (£314 delivered) and i know it's a TN panel but i sit right in front so the viewing angle for me isn't that important, anyway, so far so good, will let you know if i come across any problems.

Re: Dell True Colour E248WFP

Thanks for the review Kraas, you sound like a happy customer and I think that a fair few people will be giving this monitor some consideration due to the problems with the 2407WFP-HC.

If you spot anything else that youdo or don't like please share your thoughts.

Re: Dell True Colour E248WFP

Hi,

I have just got one of these to evaluate for our design studio, to replace our deteriorating 21" CRT's and a 20" 2005fpw LCD's.

We originally wanted 2407FPW's but the lead time is large on these at the moment (well into 2008).

Initial impressions were not ideal:

Good

lovely big size

Bad
Very basic features - no usb ports , component / s-video inputs, only VGA and DVI.
No height adjust, but does tilt.
No portrait (not that one would want to!)
Colours out of the box look very stange.

But after turning colour management off, and sitting a bit further back things are looking more promising.

FYI, my frame of reference is 2007FP, 2005FPW and Misubishi Diamondtron DP230SB CRTs (which we have to run very dim now to keep the colours accurate).

We have an eye one calibrator so I'll run that and let you know how it goes.

Re: Dell True Colour E248WFP

OK, calibrated and 'warmed-up' it's much, much better.

Only 1 minor gripe at the moment - white is a touch over saturated.

More when I have worked with it for a while.

But what are the best settings to use with this monitor? I really have no idea where to start?

That'll be because the maximum resolution of the panel is 1920 x 1200...

Ive had a fiddle about and its going pretty good now. but the icons and the startbar etc look really small, any ideas how to enlarge them? On 1050 the icons are about the right size. how can i alter it on 1200?

Re: Dell True Colour E248WFP

I hooked up my ps3 to the monitor (afer changing the output on the PS3 to HDMI), the monitor finds the signal fine, but only displays a solid red screen followed by a fuzzy red screen!?

Re: Dell True Colour E248WFP

As I don't know what settings the PS3 has I can only suggest you have a look for HDMI/RGB type settings.

Re: Dell True Colour E248WFP

I have the same setup and it works fine, although it isn't 1:1 (stretched vertically slightly).

I had to pull a few pins out of the cable as the Dell only has a DVI-D socket and the plug was DVI-I.
