I am on their XL package which is 10/20MB AFAIK.

But lately my download speed is 150kbps. yes folks, you read that right...

150 KBPS.

I am seriously considering dropping VM and go for other ISP.

But I'm not sure if it is my fault or is it VM's fault.

Ideas?

Go here, you're not alone.

I was on the 10meg and never had a problem until they upgraded to the 20Meg service. Now I average 4meg on a good day.:thumbsdow

My worst ever download was under 56K and that was almost everywhere, not just one site.

I have had a similar experience. When it was 10meg I would get about 9 meg
but when we were upgraded to 20meg, I got about 13meg at first. After
following VM's instuctions to "tune up" my computer I increased to about
16meg which was quite acceptable though not 20meg.

However over the last few weeks I can get about 14meg during the day
but it drops to about 1meg during the evening. I am not capped as
upload remains OK and anyway I do not do large downloads. I think
VM just cannot provide enough capacity for all users and are throttling
back everyone just to keep us on line.

If they came out and told us what was going on and when it will be
corrected I would be prepared to wait but all they seem to concentrating
on is the proposed 50meg rate. As it is I am now looking for alternatives.

guys you dont know if it VM fault or your pcs fault first of all
If your on blueyonder then type
gamefiles.virginmedia.com into ur address bar no www.
then click on the blueyonder folder then battlefield 1942 then demo then win32 and download the 2 files at the same time add them together for your transfer rate. This is a far more accurate test.
and to honest id say 70% of calls i get about slow speeds is down to their pc.
If ur still getting slow speeds are you using a router? are you using usb or etherenet as usb connection cant handle 20mb with pc overheads its about 7mb
is your network card set to 100mb or 10mb all these make a difference. If still slow then tech support can check for outages if now then can check the tx load is on the ubr. and is ur coaxial cable at the back of the cable modem secure as if loose that will slow ur connection down. The biggest cause is spyware most people say my pc is fine but if i ask to type netstat -a in the command prompt
and anything over 15 tcp/udas is going to be a problem.

Sorry M8 but it IS VM's problem, at least in my case..

Was quite a happy chappie on 20Mb, consistantly downloading at 2.2Mb/s then suddenly 3 weeks ago speed dropped to 400Kb/s maximum.

Took me 3 weeks of badgering and a tech visit before they would even admit there is a problem. The Tech was brilliant, at my house for over 2 hours, tried different modems etc and had to give up in the end.

There is no way it's my PC's because:

1: Working fine before with no changes made.
2: Same results after a rebuild
3: Same results on 1 x Vista Premium Laptop (fresh build), 1 x XP Pro Laptop (fresh clean install), 1 x Vista Ultimate Laptop (2 week old install) and 1 x iMac (Brand new).
4: All speed checks carried out in front of VM tech connected directly to modem. VM Tech even went home and brought back his Motorola modem, same result.
5: VM tech admitted they have had a lot of problems since they started merging traffic with exNTL network (I'm exBlueyonder)

well since all those checks have been done then if not an issue with the node or ubr then you will most likely need a repull done. withlooking at ur account its hard to say but hopefully it will get sorted soon

I think it is VM and not my computer in my case. Most of the day I
get good download speeds (16meg) measured on several speed test sites
including VM's own. In the evening speeds measured on the same
sites are under 2meg. After midnight they return to around 16meg.
I don't see how my computer would select different running rates
according to time of day but I can see that VM's system might
depending upon traffic. As I said before, I download little and I
am not being capped - just subject to a general slowdown. :(

Sky broadband can be similar, wonder if it could be traffic ??, when most people goto bed around mid-night it seems to speed up again, and weekends mostly seem ok

Between 4pm and Midnight Virgin apply their "traffic management" policy.

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

If you download over a certain amount you will be capped. The amount you can download before this happens depends on your package. (see above link)

Personally i think they don't stick to the stated "rules" and cap more people, hence all these lower speeds during peak hours.

I've just checked the 2 downloads above and I'm seeing around 550K average.
I'm using a router (it was the same before I bought it and the same with it removed) on the ethernet connection.
My network card is set to 100full.

type netstat -a in the command prompt
and anything over 15 tcp/udas is going to be a problem.

I did that, what am I supposed to be looking at in the results? The number of tcp entries? If so I had 7 tcp entries I couldn't see udas anywhere.

This is getting on for 6months I've had a below par service.
