The 1st Gen iPhone 1.1.4 and below unlocking thread
Mod note: All your iPhone unlocking discussion in here please
---
Hi,
I am thinking of buying a unlocked 8gb Iphone for approx £350 off ebay but it is the US versions and says it is unlocked for all sims (wanting to use in UK).
Could anyone please give me any reasons why this is a good deal what i am doing or why people would advise me to wait until the UK release.
Also if I put my O2 payg sim in would it work and would I still get all the features.. e.g. google earth..?? or would any other payg sim work in it?
Many Thanks

Don't forget that the US iPhone is only 2G. if you want to Google Earth etc you'd be better of with a phone that does 3G and browsing. Make sure the UK iPhone does if you decide to wait.
Also beware if the Uk iPhone only comes with 2 year contracts. Many of its features are outdated now (e.g. 2 MP camera); in two years time you'll be well behind the technology curve.

Re: Apple Iphone 8gb (US version using in UK)
The US IPhone is EDGE (2.5G) and O2 have just converted their network to EDGE so make of that what you will.
The initial UK IPhones will be no different to the US versions except for the fact they will probably be the same in Pounds as the Americans pay in Dollars.
I'll be picking on up in Florida when I go at the end of the month

I am in the UK and have had a US iPhone since the week it was launched. Just this week the SIM unlock has finally arrived and I now have mine working on Orange. Even without the phone functionality it was worth every penny to me, but with the phone it is awesome. I am using data via Orange Edge and it works pretty well performance wise. Yesterday I was in Birmingham on a train needing a map of Birmingham and no problem at all. Web browsing is very usable as well.
To the OP - I wouldn't hesitate to go for it, don't wait for Apple/O2.

Don't forget the OP was asking about the high data content Google Earth, not the low res Google Maps.
Presumably if the OP wanted mapping he'd get a GPS based device like the N95.

I was using the term Google Maps a bit generically, Google Earth works just as well on the iPhone you just hit a button to switch between maps and earth). In fact I was showing an American friend an aerial view of their house in Colorado Springs last night on my iPhone.

Re: Apple Iphone 8gb (US version using in UK)
I'll have a fully unlocked 8GB iphone (sim ulocked too) next week for sale. Obviously I will put it in the correct section when it's available (prob Tues) but i'll be looking for around £395.

You'll struggle to get that much for it when someone can buy one for £269 in 7 weeks time and use the same unlock procedure.

Re: Apple Iphone 8gb (US version using in UK)
Well, already had two offers today for it. £400 and £350. It's the "I want right now" mentality.
I may well keep it though and sell my XDA instead. I recently sold my old iPod for £110 so that went against it too.
By the way, you can't buy them for £200 from the USA, lowest you will find from a reputable seller is £240 plus shipping.
Unless you go over and pick one up yourself - you'd then have to figure in the state tax at 7% though.
Very nice piece of kit. For the naysayers, I would reserve judgement until you have actually used/touched one.

Re: Apple Iphone 8gb (US version using in UK)
Hi
I have just bought an unlocked iphone on ebay and hope it will be here on Friday or Monday. How do I set up o2 active?
Once I have done that will it work just like the phone that o2 are selling from 9th November?

Hi
I could be wrong about this but I thought that if you failed the A&T credit check they were letting you buy the iphone and go onto pay as you go.

Re: Apple Iphone 8gb (US version using in UK)
You can walk into any Apple store and just buy the phone. It comes with an AT&T sim installed.
Officially you then hook up to iTunes and choose your plan - iTunes activates the phone, AT&T credit check you and you accept "online".
Unofficially you jailbreak the phone, discard the sim, unlock it and then pop your own sim in.
You don't sign up the way we do (although I'm led to believe that o2 will activate via iTunes) - different from any other UK activation.
