Rear car speakers
I'm looking for a set of speakers to mount in the rear of my sister's car.
Now my choice of speakers would be discreet, minimal sizing but an excellent clarity. My "girl racer" sister's idea would be for huge audible impact and huge visible impact - in her own words, she'd like them to be red
Can anyone suggest the currently most fashionable rear speakers that should have all the teenage racers in their pants?

Re: Rear car speakers
first things first.
why does she want rear speakers. If shes in the front driving the rear speakers will take the focus from the fronts ones. Put it this way you wouldn't go to a live concert and sit with your back to it for better sound would you?
If she does want rear speakers do you want 5.25"/6.5"/6x9/7x10?
If she does really want some decent speakers go for some DLS 1070 7x10's in a stealth shelf with a decentish amp. these will give superb clarity as well as some decent bass. big fancy speakers in red/pink are usually cr@p sounding and best avioded to be honest with you.

I agree!.........but just having the front speakers are ok, but back ones as well will fill up the car a hell of a lot more!

Re: Rear car speakers
they will do but thats because there basically pulling the sound more to the back of the car. All high end installs/competitors use a single 2/3 way very high front end which is usally active and a sub and thats it. If shes going to be carrying passengers quite often then rear speakers might be a good option, it just depends on her needs. Like I said the DLS 1070 will offer brilliant all round sound and if set up properly would offer a very good amount of bass.

Re: Rear car speakers
If she's a proper girl racer, and is intending to go down the full car aduio route, with subs, amps etc, explain to her that it's pointless putting in rear speakers if she's gonna get a sub - expecially 6x9's or 7x10's - as the sub frequency cancels them out anyway.....
I always had a good set of largish component speakers up front, usually a 6" or 6.5" mid bass driver with seperate 1" tweets, and then whatever arsenal of subs in the boot (various configs, ranged from 2x 12" to 3x 10", to 1x 15" etc.....) I did fit rear speakers, little 4" single unit jobbies purely for a bit of rear fill for when I had rear passengers, but these ran off the headunit and had the gain turned right down....
Likewise with a friends install - he went "all out" and had components up front, 2x 12" subs in the boot with a pair of 6x9's on the rear shelf. Came round to show me how good his bass was, and I thought it was sh!t lol..... So I just cut the connectors to the cones on the 6x9's so only the tweets were playing, and instantly it felt and sounded better. Mainly cos the subs were firing into the airspace in the boot that the 6x9's were also trying to use, and each cancelled the other out somewhat. Eliminating the 6x9 cones allowed the subs the "breathe" fully, raulting in better sound and feel

Re: Rear car speakers
I know that Matt but the OP basically is asking for some rear speakers. and like I said if shes going all out she'll just want some decent components and sub.
there can be many factors into car audio like home audio. I had some Boston Acoustic Z6's last year which where £1200 at the time and sounded awful in stock locations. I've now got some DLS Iridium 6.2's in kick builds with the tweeters in the A pillars and the sound is fantastic

Re: Rear car speakers
Cheers for the tips gents. Like I said, the image was more important than the actual sound quality - she only wanted loud, in both visual and audio sense. I suspect she'd have been happy even if they weren't connected
Think I've talked her out of rear speakers now. She only drives a 106, its just not worth it, a pair of decent front speakers will suffice.
Not to keen on going into the amp and bass tube route because its a wad load of more cash!
This is a different world to me. While I'm passionate about my home sound quality I'm happy to make to do with the standard issue setup in my civic.

Re: Rear car speakers
A little 10" sub in a small box with a 100w amp in the boot will make ALL the difference Decent sized components up front for a bit of mid-bass punch, and a 10" in the boot - doesn't need to to be super loud or "thumpy", but set it up well and it'll deliver the low end the fronts are missing

Re: Rear car speakers
or for £350 she could look at the dls ASB 326
http://dls.alfredo.se/en/car/prod.html?produkt=en_389
It features 2 6.5" bass drivers in an active enclosure and although it won't drop as low as a 12" it will sound like a very tight and punchy 10" with minimal foot print and weight!

Re: Rear car speakers
I guess she'll be running them off the head unit so what you really need a a pair of high sensitivity 6x9's mounted in the parcel shelf (if you can reinforce it with some MDF, all the better). It's all very well banging on about soundstage, imaging, amps and subs etc but you can be 100% sure that all the girl in question wants something cheap and loud. And why not.
JBL and Infinity are the typical Halfords brands and TBH are pretty good, if she wants red then Sony is the best option but probably not as capable as the JBLs (as this is exactly the market they are aimed at).
