I'm struggling to get internet working on my iphone. Have tried numerous settings for o2 and Vodafone, and am waiting on T-Mobile and Orange sims so I can try them too.
There must be loads of UK users with the same problem, I'm hardly technically illiterate, so I know (hope) I'm doing everything else correctly.
Has anyone managed to get GPRS set up and working on a PAYG sim? Please post your settings here!
Thanks
PS wireless works fine

the 'E' is displayed, but I can't connect. Seems to be a lot easier to use Edge with a contract rather than PAYG

I have just returned from the US and brought back two iPhones - one for my colleague who is on a T-Mobile contract and has his GPRS/EDGE working, where as I am using a PAYG O2 SIM and can not get any of the settings working.
If anyone else has a PAYG O2 SIM working with GPRS/EDGE working please post which APN, username and password to use. I've tried the payandgo.o2.co.uk, mobile.o2.co.uk and a few others. It transmit data, you can see in the data counter, but Safari reports an error.
Any advice would be appreciated

O2 don't seem to support data on PAYG apart from WAP, but you can get around it by using a manual proxy,
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
ID: payandgo
PW: password
These setting work for me with Firefox and IE, sorry not familiar with Safari:
Browser connection settings, manual proxy configuration
HTTP Proxy: 193.113.200.195
Port number: 8080
DNS Servers (if required): 193.113.200.200 and 193.113.200.201

There's no mobile internet on O2 prepay at the moment so you wont get it working unless you get an O2 contract SIM (try the SIMPLICITY tarriff @ £15/month).

Out of all the PAYG sims I tried I could only get online with Virgin Mobile. I think Vodafone worked for a while, but can't remember, I probably ran out of credit before properly testing it.

Hey:
Thanks for the reply however I am really confused now. My partner has an O2 PAYG phone (LG L7) and he can send and receive email/picture messages/mobile internet - so I know that O2 PAYG customers can get data connectivity - I just wish I knew how!

Have given up trying to get GPRS on PAYG, and have ordered an o2 Simplicity sim at £15 per month plus £7.50 for unlimited (ie not really unlimited) browsing.

Where did you read that?? They upgraded most of their transmitters in July & August to Edge which led to all the speculation that they had the iPhone contract.

I'm a bit confused with terminology. I have my iPhone hooked up to vodafone and I see the little blue E symbol and the connection works fine if not that quick.
Can someone explain if there is a difference between Edge and GPRS or are they one and the same but just a different name?
I keep reading that O2 has improved their edge support? How does this compare with the Vodafone connection that I am currently using or is it essentially the same?
Thanks

They are one in the same, the iphone only shows the E because that is all it knows how to show, E just means that GPRS is attached and available, on a non-edge phone you would see the G symbol. I have a Windows mobile and an iphone both on Voda, the iphone shows E but the Windows phone always sits on G even though it supports EDGE.
EDGE speed wise is supposed to be a GPRS+ like a mid-point between GPRS and 3G. Vodafone as far as I am aware never rolled out EDGE, they took the leap from GPRS to 3G.
Hope that made some sense.

You might (depending on your location) as O2 announced EDGE roll out along with the iphone details. They were quoting figures of 30% coverage but it may be worth having a look on the O2 site to see if this figure has been updated.

Ok, so my iPhone should arrive tomorrow, I spoke to T-mobile who said that web-n-walk covers email and web use on the phone (upto 1gb permonth). When I mentioned EDGE they made a weird sound and said it's not available in the UK and should be impossible to detect on any phone using their network (bear in mind this was one of their technical specialists I was speaking to). They also said that on the 'impossible off chance' I DO get an EDGE signal and use it for data transfers that it isn't covered by web-n-walk, only the same kind of GPRS signal that my blackberry 8800 currently uses is covered by that tarriff. So basically, all I want to know is when I put my sim card into the iPhone, what settings do I need to change to essentially get the same feautres my blackberry gives me. All I want is to recieve emails on the phone and use it for the odd bit of web usage (browsing, maps etc). So what settings do I use and where do i put them in? Sorry for the long-winded post, just I really don't want to get clobbered by a massive phone bill. Thanks!

Hi guys I just have a few queries I am hoping you can help with.
Im thinking of getting the iPhone and unlocking it to use on my T-Mobile Flext contract. In order to use the edge/gprs would it be advisable to subscribe to a web and walk package? Also is anyone aware of any coverage issues in relation to T-Mobile?
Whats the difference between GPRS and 3G, i presume 3G is faster but what does 3G have over GPRS? Is there any difference in terms of how pages are viewed? Could I still get on to youtube/hotmail?
Also I know iPhone doesnt have mms capabilities but by using GPRS is there anyway of getting around this?
Sorry for all the questions I'm a confused potential buyer and this forum seems very good for seeking out information.

so if I put this info in under settings/general/network/edge....I will be able to use the vodafone GPRS to get my emails and this will be deducted from my £7.50 bolt on bundle?

Works fine for me with Vodafone and having tested the O2 Edge network in one of their stores yesterday I can't say that I notice a difference in speed. Is Edge supposed to be noticeably quicker than GPRS?
I have a USA Unlocked Iphone and a new UK O2. My unlocked USA always displays the "E" for edge symbol, even when in a none Edge area.
Don't believe that you are receiving Edge when the symbol shows!

I've been wondering about that - from my own tests there is no Edge in Manchester, Salford (well at least the southern half) or Stockport at all. If there is in Macclesfield I might make a trip out there to see what it's like.

Firmwares 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 only showed the E icon when you were connected to the GPRS or EDGE networks, firmware 1.1.3 brings the ability for the iphone to show what network it is connected to with a blue box being GPRS and a blue box with an E in it being the EDGE network.
I live in Stalybridge and get pretty good EDGE connection but it can be quite patchy as I travel around.

2. "Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE"

Thanks to the info in this thread, I've got my edge settings in for Vodaphone and working well.
My questions is this - does the phone prioritise wifi over gprs/edge? Or does it connect to both when you start surfing?
If I'm in the office or at home, I don't want to be racking up Vodaphone wap time when the phone could be using wifi. And I don't want the hassle of disabling edge when in a wifi zone, just to avoid this.
Cheers for any help.

Looks like you need to get your iPhone onto your wireless network so it has an IP address. Then you use openSSH from your PC to log into the phone.

Your settings are correct, if you upgraded from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 then 1.0.2 didnt have the blank box GPRS symbol it always showed E no matter what data connection you had.
You arent getting an E because you arent in an Edge area.

Hi
My iPhone worked perfectly up to yesterday (including emails, Safari etc). Yesterday it wouldn't sync with my Mac: it didn't add new entries I had in my iPhone. Eventually I started afresh ... I managed the sync after resetting sync history (all entries on Mac now on iPhone, but new ones on iPhone are now gone). The "old" address book on my Mac (without the new entries on my iPhone!) was synced with my iPhone.
Furthermore, I set everything re Mail and Safari like it was (I wrote it down the first time I did this and couldn't get it going) but no go: "Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE". We do not have EDGE - I did set Network to Data Roaming (like the first time) but it doesn't work.
Any suggestions?
Chris

Hi,
Could anyone help me out with what I need to put in the Iphone EDGE settings to get it working???...I am with vodafone pre pay & the iphone has been updated to 1.1.4 firmware, the installer app & jail broken & all that but can't get the installer going without the EDGE being activated...
If I go to "Settings" > "General" > "Network" > "EDGE"
I have 3 things to enter...
1. APN -I have no idea what should go here...
2. Username
3. Password
Can somebody please help me out here because I want to use the iphone to it's full potential...

i think this is a great feature, however i think mine MAY be running off 3g by default rather then my home wifi, is it possible to change this? Also is there a download limit with the 3g connection? (i know they say its unlimited but normally theres a fair usage policy)
thanks

I hope you obtain an answer to your question as I will be running mine with Gmail too.
Surely it can be defaulted to run off WiFi where available?

yeah i was thinking that it could be defaulted too but i cant find where you set that, also do you know how to check how much 3g you've used? really cautious about going above the limit :god:

Hi,
I have read some posts about setting up GPRS on an iPhone. I have gone to do so on mine, received the current settings from tmob but when i go to connect to the internet (get mail or on safari) i get the following message:
Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE
I could access the internet through GPRS on my old phone and i really need it to work on my iPhone.
Help me Please.
Thanks

There seems to be some issue with t-mobile.
I have a 1G 8GB iPhone pwn'ed with 1.1.4 running. Up until last week it was working fine with the following settings
general.t-mobile.uk
user
wap
But this week it won't access the internet or maps, but does still download e-mails?????
Just rang t-mobile and they said to use
general.t-mobile.uk
user
pass
but that still doesn't get it to work. ARRRGGGGHHHH
Anyone else on t mob with this issue?

If you have wifi turned on the iphone will automatically use that over any other connection.
Follows the rule
Wifi
No Wifi use 3g
No 3g Use EDGE
No EDGE use GPRS
No GPRS.... wouldn't even bother

I'm trying to get my iPhone on the web with an O2 PAYG sim in it and I think I've tried about everything and it's still not working.
I jailbroke it, unlocked the Edge settings in the settings menu and put in the payandgo.o2.co.uk and so forth as the APN etc and although it no longer tells me I'm not subscribed to Edge, it's telling me Safari can't open the page because the connection was lost on any page other than www.o2.co.uk (http://www.o2.co.uk). Anyone know what I can do to fix this? Do I need to install a different browser or something?

I'm having exactly the same problem. US iPhone, 2.0 firmware unlocked with Pwnage. O2 payg sim with 'web and wifi' bolt-on. I can see o2.co.uk, but any other domain gives me an error.
Any suggestions?

Found the answer to this on the o2 forums: change the username to 'vertigo'. All working now :)
