Looking to buy the old iMac
I was going to buy the current Mac Mini with the superdrive so £499, and then that requires keyboard, and monitor on top, so I thought why don't I buy the last-gen iMac for £569 refurbished with keyboard+mouse.
This one: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObje...LID?nplm=FA590
Quote:
Refurbished iMac 17-inch 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SuperDrive
1GB (2x512MB) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)
160GB Serial ATA hard drive
Slot-load 8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory
Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0
Built-in iSight Camera and Apple Remote

has nay bought refurbished iMacs? Are they brand new or actually refurbished. I ask this because I know that most of the "refurbished" iPods are new, they just sell the old models which have been replaced their.
I am getting this just for web and word-processing, it is for a family member, so this is okay right? I assume it has MORE than enough power to do everyhting one should need, even HD video i.e. x264 mkv files (not blu-ray/hd-dvd).
I was actually thinking just to buy a cheap PC, but I've never had a Mac (well I did have a Apple Macintosh about 10 years ago ) from the new breeds.
EDIT: Also does anywhere else sell these old iMacs or Mac Mini? I want to get one cheap as possible really.
EDIT2: I see Leopard is coming out, if I wait, do you think this will come pre-installed? I doubt it somehow as the box will need to be opened. And also how much do you think Leopard will be roughly?

Re: Looking to buy the old iMac
I would only buy a refurbished mac, the reason is that you can get some bargins. I have seen and used many that had extras on them. More ram better drives, You can also pick them up instore. Go for it, very good price for what your getting.
You get everything as standard its just the price your changing.

Re: Looking to buy the old iMac
As Pixel says they often come with more ram installed or larger drives than indicated or better graphics cards - some are returned/cancelled orders, some are ex display, some are end of line - in either case they are fully cleaned and checked before dispatch ... very good value ...

Yes, they do this in store. You just need to ask in a nice way. Maybe access the mac store refurb site and then ask someone, I am told you do this service in store ? When they say no, say a friend got one the other day. I use that line many times in various stores.
I am the computer buyer/advice giver for my whole family, think I am near 50+ computers and 10+ macs over the years so far. I got a recent MacBook for my brothers girlfriend for around £600. It was a refurb and its perfect you would never tell.
** Remember you are only going to get what the store takes back and also what they have not already sent back to Apple. Its hit and miss but well worth it, good luck
