Calibrating Freeview?

Hi
This might be a daft question but here it goes

I can understand different inputs being calibrated as they can have a source connected to them , but how can you calibrate a internal freeview tuner or an analog tuner for that matter as there is no way to play the calibration disc on them?

Same for SKY HD , or do you substitute the box with a DVD player, would this then be correct as it would not be the true source?

Apologies if this is a dumb question

Regards

So far as Sky HD is concerned, Sky does transmit a test card from time to time, usually overnight, that you can record for use later

A freeview tuner can often be adjusted to ensure it is exactly tuned. This is usually called fine tuning in the manual

The actual tv settings can be adjusted visually, as you say, by introducing a dvd player into the system and playing a tuning disc available from Amazon or elsewhere

Re: Calibrating Freeview?

You can also use certain types of programme material in order to accurately set up internal tuners.

Thanks Gordon
Can you perhaps give some examples of ones you had in mind?
Also would the calibration requirements be different for a HD source compared to a Standard PAL broadcast?

Also thanks to all who have replied as I am new to calibration and only have the DVE disc at the moment although have been considering SPYDER TV but unfortunately it does not cover greyscale.
Can anyone recommend a beginners guide to start me off with research

Re: Calibrating Freeview?

The most important thing when setting up, imho, is to set black level and white level correctly. This shouldn't change for SD and HD. To set them you look for something that definately has BLACK in the image and for contrast you look for something that has bright white detail. As has been said there are test patterns at times on SkyHD I believe.
