There's no valid source for this yet, so I won't be holding my breath.
I'd be happy sticking to 4MB if only they stopped throttling me!!

Had an engineer out to look at my V+ box and he told me that from January everyone will be on at least 10mb Broadband, but also said that they will throttle heavy users down to under 1mb.

I was thinking of going on the 20MB XL package but if this is going to happen in January '08 (fingers crossed) then I'll stick with my 4MB package. About time too as you can get cheaper 8MB packages with BT/Pipex/Zen et al.

I would rather they sorted out their speed and capcity issues first!
And the traffic management is a joke!

They just cut the speeds two weeks ago by doubling the throttled speed, I think it's a little naive to expec them to now increase the speed of the service so dramatically.
You should never believe a word you're told by any of these engineers or customer service reps, they're always promising all sorts that never happens.

which is pretty much anyone who does more than just send emails online. And those are the people that don't even bloody need a 10MB connection!
Customer Service now saying March or April for this - fingers crossed they are wrong and it is sooner.

Had confirmation in work this week. Will be starting in Feb and rolling out region by region over the remainder of the year. In much the same way the 20meg was.

Does this mean a pro-rata increase in the traffic shaping limits too in line with the new speeds?
Somehow i doubt it. :thumbsdow
I'll have bust the limit in about 5 or 10 minutes when i get my 50mb upgrade!! LOL.

No news on that :thumbsdow, but I would think it will eventually follow suit - probably not until next year given the 4>10mb is happening thru til about the end of summer, and the 50mb is due to launch at the end of the year.

Don't remember reading anything about an increase in limits, but you would think so.
But then again it is VirginMedia we're talking about and it just wouldn't be fun if they started to apply logic to the situation.
Well if they did pro rata it, that would make it 2000mb before being shaped for the 10mb users..better but still only 32mins max downloading.
To be honest I'm suprised thety are upgrading us....I just imagine there will be a flock of 20mb users downgrading to 10mb as the peak time speeds will be similar...

I effectively dropped from 20Mb to 8Mb when I switched to be (on the 24Mb pack but 2.5km from exchange), and yet I'm much happier cause I get faster speeds in the evening!

Asked at the Northampton Virgin Media store, they didn't have any information about any possible 2MB speed increase.
But, it would only cost another £7 a month extra on my £20 deal, (2MB + Phone, plus free basic TV) to upgrade to 4MB, which will soon be 10MB.
Tempted.

From what I've been reading elsewhere you will need to reboot your modem for the speed increase to take effect.

By rebooting do you man turning the modem off and on again. If so then everything gets turned off from the mans at night and turned back on again early evening when I get home fom work and guess what............last night speed was down to just over 2 meg !!!! I have sent tons of E mails to virgin and I just get patronising replies. I really do think that Virgin are full of sh.. !
Has anybody here tested to see if the upgrade has actually arrived ?

Testing my speed this morning it seems that my 4mb has gone up to around 6mb.
The maximum downstream rate in the modem config states 10240000 so I suppose that is 10mb. I live in the Bedford area and there is no scheduled date for the upgrade.

The site has just been updated again - there is still little in the way of when upgrades will happen, they seem to update it only when an upgrade happens. They will have to get their skates on to complete all regions even during the Summer.
The Mansfield are was originally down as March and then they changed it to April, running out of April now !

Because I had a valid complaint against Virgin and I phoned up the cancellations department I managed to get 20Mb for no extra cost for 6 months, so I've no need to worry about this for a while now :)

Noticed today that my upgrade has come through..............
http://www.speedtest.net/result/266697247.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
But I can only get this when connected straight to the PC.
When I connect through the router (Netgear Rangemax Next WNR854T) I only get about 2400kbps. :(
Anybody know why this should be? With VM's 4Mbps service I normally got around 3950kbps?
Edit: OK got it sorted. Went into Device Manager on PC and changed the "Speed and Duplex" setting in the Network Adaptor to "Auto"
This seems to have done the trick. :)

Closer geographically doesn't necessarily mean shortest internet path. You probably have to do an extra hop or 2 to connect to the Dublin server.
Phoned Virgin the other day trying to get a date out of them - they would not give me a date and the lady said that it should have all been completed by the end of April! if this is so then they are hopelessly behind.

Good one - take previous posts comments about what are you are in. Very difficult to tell and I did suggest they change it as it is very hard to tell the area and the regions are clumped together in a very un-helpful way. Still - 10m for no charge - I won't complain too much.

Anyone know which area covers Hampton, West London? Their update site is rubbish - what's wrong with displaying a map or having a post code search?
I actually tried to call Customer Services to enquire - holy crappola, that is one useless service! Actually took me nearly 10 minutes to explain my query - chap tootled off to ask his supervisor. Came back and told me, yes, I would be upgraded very soon! What?! That's not what I asked at all! ARGHHH! :suicide:

I am gonna guess that you're covered by Croydon since that stretches up to include Twickenham and I'm thinking it gets Hampton on the way. If it's not Croydon then I can't even guess where Hampton might fall. Maybe Reading?

Question.. Is your contract for 2meg with Virgin?
If so you will not be legible for the free 10mg up-grade; only applicable if you’re on there 4meg package.
If you are on there 4meg package I would be on the phone now complaining.

I do a re-boot every now and then just in case. I know the website says June but I don't know when in June and I have read a number of times about people getting there upgrade early. 10 meg will certainly help with my HD trailers!

Well blow me down :)
Just had a phone call from Virgin. Apparently because Newcastle is an old telewest area it comes under gateshead.
Gateshead is down TBC
The update sites says Norwich/Great Yarmouth area is complete, can anybody confirm?
LOL why wait?
I too was on 4mb package waiting endlessly for my area to go up to 10mb..... the same old TBC, yeah its coming dont worry blah blah blah....
Right now £25 for 4MB (for those of you who are on that) is a disgrace, they are fleecing you - and they know that 4MB for £25 is a poooor deal compared to what other DSL providers are giving away....
I got fedup of seeing TBC for months, they are just trying to keep you holding on instead of going elsewhere.....went to O2 ADSL 2+ for £25 (inc line rental) and now getting 16Mb!!!!! :) .... even if I waited for VM to upgrade 4mb to 10mb im still getting a better deal with O2 for the same price, plus no bandwidth caps !!!
My area was upgraded yesterday - now getting just over 9 meg. Doesn't feel twice as fast but I'm not going to complain - tv basic package, telephone line rental plus all calls all day (01 and 02 numbers) included and 10 meg for £27 a month!
