Sony SR7 Playback help

Hey everyone,
I am in need of some help. I just bought the Sony SR7 Handycam and am very confused on what I need to do to be able to playback and store video on my Powerbook. At the moment I realize the editing capablities are limited but what I really need to be able to do is just download my videos onto my mac to playback and store. Right now I am willing to record in SD if that simiplfies things for me but I am going on a month long trip and need to be able to store some of the video. I was hoping to use quicktime but whatever works with a mac would be great. At the moment I am able to transfer the mpeg files taken in SD onto my computer but when I go to play them it says the file is not a movie file. M2U00002.MPG is what its named when viewed on my computer. Please, if someone is familar with this problem help me.
