Thoughts on an E4300 and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Combo

hi there,

im going to be upgrading my athlon xp 2600 (2.25Ghz)/ A7N8X-x kit with the E4300 and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 combo mainly due to the excellent overclocking abilities of the E4300 giving it excellent performance and gives me less need into opting for an E6xx CPU.

is anyone using this combo?

is there any other recommendations for the mobo with the E4300 overclocking capabilities? the gigabye has 1x ide port, where i use 2 optical drives. Would a controller card be just as good to use in terms of performance for extra ide ports?

as a starting reference i used for the cpu and mobo:

Re: Thoughts on an E4300 and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Combo

I'm running an E4300 in a GA-965P-DS3P and it runs ok for me.
I've got some PC6400 (800MHz) ram in there, which is recommended if you intend to overclock.

Had a little excursion into the realms of overclocking and got a stable overclock at 3.2GHz. (Well once I'd figured that pressing <cntrl>+F1 got you into the advanced BIOS settings!)

Running away from the stock settings did up the CPU voltage though (left the MB to decide the operating voltages) and consequently the operating temps. The recommended monitoring programs did display differences of opinion regarding the actual temps however! I gather it has something to do with the type of junction on some of the CPU dies, some use one type and others use the other type IIRC.

Didn't play too much though as time is short at the moment for me. Also as you may gather I'm pretty new to the OC'ing game, plus at stock it runs fast, quiet and cool enough for most of my needs.

This GUIDE is the one that taught me pratically all I know about OC'ing!

NB Just because one person can get one CPU running at 3.2GHz doesn't mean that ALL CPUs of the same type will run at that speed. Some chips will run faster and some will hardly overclock at all, or very little and only after a lot of work. Just the luck of the draw, though this CPU does seem to offer very good odds on obtaining a chip that will overclock well.

Good luck with it.

hmm yes id intending to put Corsair XMS2 in there with some fast timings, 44412, 800MHZ.

where did you get your board and cpu from? ebuyer doesnt do that board... scan does but there out of stock at the mo, and they have all the items i need which would be good to save on shipping.

If you plan on overclocking, the E2160 is meant to be great for the purpose. Or you can wait for the E2180 which has a 10x multiplier.

Re: Thoughts on an E4300 and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Combo

Previous had the E4300 and DS3 combo and it's excellent for a budget bang for buck set up.

Easy to overclock with and good results (had my E4300 @ 3.2ghz no probs).

Would suggest considering the slightly newer P35 chipset board of the ds3. Slightly more future proof etc.

Great combo and u won;t regret it at all.

I'm afraid that I got both from eBuyer some months ago, (certainly when the google deal was still running). I was actually worried that I wouldn't get the board as they showed awaiting stock not long after I placed the order and it wasn't actually delivered in the time frame it was supposed to arrive, and not until I started to chase it up with them did I finally receive the MB. So it wouldn't surprise me if I hadn't received one of the last ones they had.

Anyhow that doesn't help you much, but as BOOYAKA wrote above, the chip has been superseded by the P35, not sure of the price differences though. But I suppose availability may make the choice for you.
