Motorola Surfboard SB4100

Hi People,

Can anyone give me some advice please?

I have been with Telewest/Virgin now for many years, when I first had the service installed I was on the 1mb service, I am now on there 20mb "Max" service, I regulary check the speed with www.speedtest.net I only seem to be able to get 5200 kb/s Download and 670 kb/s Upload speeds, this varies day to day.

I know there are a lot of issues with speed etc, but I would have thought I would have got a bit better than what I am getting also considering that Virgins Green Box is right outside my house, I am thinking could it be the original Motorola Surfboard SB4100 that was suppled when I first signed up with Telewest some 6 or so years ago, but I would say that I have had only one or two problems with the service in that time,

Any thoughts,

Cheers,

Dave

Re: Motorola Surfboard SB4100

I've just signed up to 20MB service, but never achieved anything like it.
Trades descriptions act springs to mind and constantly throttled during the day running at about 5mb because I've downloaded 3+GB
You don't see this in the small print whren you sign up.

Was on 4MB service for £25, not worth the extra £12.
Going to cancel and seek elsewhere
Modem is Motorola SB5101E and I am using a wireless network

Try it at different times of the day for a few days and use other speedtesters see what happens if it still stays at that email them or phone them but there is a lot of issues with VM and speed is a big one.

Re: Motorola Surfboard SB4100

I had a MR SB4100 and when upgraded to 20Mb found that it was not capable of supporting that speed so ordered another modem online. Unfortunately now the whole country has been upgraded the link is no longer there so you may need to phone for one but should get your call cost refunded as it is an issue with their equipment. Alternatively try the support newsgroup virginmedia.support.broadband.cable they should be able to help.

Re: Motorola Surfboard SB4100

I had one of the old TW modems and always got full speed (10mb at last count) but whe we got "ungraded" to 20mb i never got more than 16mb (lucky to get that). I ordered a new modem and now i get the full 20mb except when i get capped.
As the new modems are free i say go and get one, you have nothing to loose.

Re: Motorola Surfboard SB4100

No need to speak to technical support for a new modem.

If your old modem is not capable of 20meg then ring customer services who will arrange to send out a compatible modem for no additional charge.
