right i sorted my virgin rubbish speeds

for a few months i have not been getting my max download speed. so after loads and loads of call to there help lines some one told me to plug another pc or laptop in and try and and see what speed i can get, so i did and got 1.2MB/s and on mine it was 615KB/s max.

so i ordered a new external hard drive last week and copy all my important stuff to it and used the pc`s restore cd and deleted eveything and made it like the day i got it.

just updated windows and the stuff you do like normal and now with ABC bittorent i have been getting 1.9MB/s. i am now on there 20meg package.

so if you have slow speeds it really could be your pc and not them.

Over the past few months my speed has sometimes been about 16kbs and I am on 8mb adsl connection. I have a Belkin routerr/modem.

Both my PC and PS3 donwload at this speed. I think its Virgin. They really are a disgrace!!

How do I know the speed on my PS3? WHen you download a file, for the 1st 10mb you can see the bytes going up.

I am on Virgins 4mb package and noticed for about a week there that I was coming home and the net was crawling (taking an age to open webpages sometimes), after much farting about over the space of a few days I think I found the problem.

Everynight I switch off the virgin modem and my wireless netgear router, but since I have been leaving them on 24/7 my speeds are back to normal again, so much so that just last night I was getting 540k download speed from a torrent.

I didnt think switching the modem etc off made a difference, but it certainly seemed to for me.

P.s I have not been capped, in case anyone was thinking maybe thats the issue

agreedd, i have the same problem. virgin is a disgrace. i get 800kbs in the early morning but when i come home from work it is down to a pathetic 60 kbs. might as well use a dial up connection. and then they tell me it's 'peak' time. what, is it peak time from 10am-1am? :mad::mad:

Speed test sites are notoriously unreliable. You need to test by downloading four large files simultaneously and add the combined speeds. I always get around the 19Mb mark doing this yet a speed test site said I was only getting 6Mb. Downloaded a 2Gig XBOX demo in about 15 mins on a wireless connection last week.

In a lot of cases (not all I grant) it is as the OP said down to the set up of the PC and not necessarily Virgin at fault.
