Home Cinema video output?

I currently have my Sony DAVS500 connected to my TV by using the yellow video out to a Scart converter into the TV (a Toshiba Regza WLT66). Is this going to provide the best picture or is there another option?

Below is a barely related query that I posted re Sky+ to Home Cinema connection:

Would really appreciate some advice here to check I have things correct or if I can/should do some things different:

1) If I have Sky+ box connected to my Home Cinema do I need the red/white audio connectors as well? I also think I have a black S-Video cable coming from the Sky + box to the HC and can't think why????

2) If I use a scart from the Sky box to the TV should I invest in a fully wired one? I can't tell if I have one now (is it through the numbers of pins or do they have have the same numbers and just some are not wired). If have the Sky box set to RGB and the picture seems fine (Toshiba Regza WLT42). Happy to buy one if needed but don't want to spend unnescessarily.

3) Believe all I need to feed both my PS3 optical into the HC system as well as my Sky+ is a two way optical splitter?

At the moment I seem to have shed full of cables and I'm not sure which are contributing to perfromance and which are screwing it up, if at all.

Re: Home Cinema video output?

Sky + box should have optical out on it so you don't need the red and white connectors at all to connect to the av reciever.
The scart lead from Sky to your tv should be a fully wired RGB one yes! I think thy are 21 pin.

Re: Home Cinema video output?

Video:

Your yellow RCA video connection to your TV is just about the worst possible connection. I can't recall what output connections the DAVS500 has but the order of preference is:

HDMI or DVI (which the DAVS500 doesn't have)
Component (which it might)
RGB Scart (which it might)
S-video (almost certainly)
Composite (what you are using)

Audio:

As david 11 says the only audio connection you need is from Sky+ to DAVS500 via digital audio.

Your s-video connection from Sky+ to DAVS500 is not required.

Re: Home Cinema video output?

Thanks for that. Ripped out those cables. Suspect the system may be in need of upgrade. Poor video connectivity really. No SCART, seemingly no component (e.g. no green connectors) and no HDMI. Does have an S-Video but TV has no S-Video in socket (or at least not a round one). It has a SCART which is also labelled S-Video so I suppose I NOW need an S-Video to SCART lead.

Wondering how much better that will be though? Tempted to just play DVD back through PS3 and HDMI and output sound through optical via the Cinema system.

Re: Home Cinema video output?

Yep to use the Sony you'll need an S-video to scart lead (they're directional so make sure it the right way or switchable)

I suspect the PS3 via HDMI will give a better pic, but you would need some kind of digital audio splitter to select either Sky+ or PS3.
