Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
Probably sounds like a stupid question, but oh well.
SCART video looks a lot better than composite video obviously. But is it possible to someway split it, so I can use SCART video but composite audio?
I want to use my headphones for watching films (Audio Technica AD700 / Denon D2000) but the headphone in on my TV is very noisy and the DVD player makes a very loud static/buzzing noise. I can easily fix this by using my headphone amp (Porta Corda MkIII) to bypass the TV's headphone in and get the audio straight from the DVD player. But by doing this I have to watch via composite in which doesn't look very good at all.
So what I would like to do, if at all possible, is use SCART video, but split the audio so I can connect the red/white composite inputs to my headphone amp. Sounds strange, and probably isn't possible. But if it is, can someone please explain what I'd need to buy and how I'd do it.
If this was clear, please say so and I'll try to clarify.
Thanks.

Re: Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
scart is a cable, composite is a video standard, scart can carry composite S-video RGBcvS and Component as well as stereo audio and data so if your DVD player doesnt have stereo audio outputs (rare) then you need a scart break out cable.

Sorry I'm not quite sure what you mean. Could you explain with a little more detail please? Sorry, I'm not very good at this.
By composite I mean yellow/white/red cables. Sorry if that isn't the proper term for it.

Re: Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
Ask a silly question get a silly answer maybe
Does your dvd player have both a scart ouptut and a set of composite video & audio outs?
Usually both are active if it does so you can connect the tv by scart and your audio amp via the rca audio outs. All you would need to do is turn down the tv volume when you want to listen on your headphones.
Or are you using some sort of scart to rca adapter so you get composite video and audio via the scart?

Re: Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
Hi there,
The simplest solution to your problem would be if your DVD player has left and right stereo audio out via red and white phono connectors at the rear of the player in addition to the SCART output.
This way you should be able to use the RGB SCART output to gain the best picture quality (unless you also have component output) in addition to having the stereo audio out. Thus enabling you to connect a twin phono to twin phono cable from the stereo audio output of your DVD player to your headphone pre-amp
If you could provide an insight into the make and model of your DVD player and/or what connections your DVD player has, I could maybe help further.
Hope that helps.
Regards.

Re: Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
Thanks for the quick responses guys. I know it's a silly question, but hey, everyone's gotta start somewhere I guess.
The DVD player is an LG DVD5063 and yes it say stereo inputs as well as a SCART input. But I think there's a problem there, my TV has two channels. One for SCART and one for phono. How would I be able to use the SCART channel and the phono channel at the same time?
Again, I'm sorry for being a noob.
But you've all been a great help so far. So thanks.

Re: Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
Ok I am hoping you are just confusing inputs and outputs but I think you have what you need.
Looking at the back of your dvd player you hopefully have a scard ouptut, simply connect the scart cable to your tv. Then find the rca audio outputs, they are the little round phono sockets, usually coloured red and white, (you may also have a yellow one whihc is the composite video). Simply use two additional phono cables to connect these audio ouputs to your headphone amp.
The dvd player should output video and audio on the scart plug and via the phono audio outputs at the same time.
So you should wind up with:
DVD player scart output connected to tv scart input.
DVD player rca (that's the red and white phono sockets) audio outputs connected to headphone amp inputs.
Turn on tv and start dvd playback should have sound and video via scart to tv. Turn on heaphones and you should have sound and video via tv plus sound via headphones, now turn the tv volume down to zero and you have picture via scart on tv with no sound and sound via headphones exactly as you wanted.

Re: Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
Haha, I'm an idiot. I should have just tried it before I asked.
I've just connected up the headphone amp (it's new you see), put the SCART cable in, changed the channel to the "ext1" and I got SCART video + audio out of my headphones.
Thanks again everyone for the idea.

Yeah that's what I did and it worked.
Thanks a lot.
Sorry for the stupid thread.

Re: Is it possible to use SCART video, but composite audio?
Hi there,
The straightforward answer is, - you don’t. That is to say that you do not need to use both the phono cable and SCART to your TV at the same time. – You disconnect the red, white and yellow cable from your TV completely and connect only the red and white phonos to your headphone pre-amp, making sure to also disconnect the yellow phono cable from your DVD player.
This should leave you with 2 phono cables, - one red and one white, connected between your DVD player and your headphone pre-amp. Leave the SCART cable exactly where it is and that’s that.
This provides audio only to your pre-amp at the same time as SCART provides your TV with picture and sound. – Then as a previous poster explained, you would simply turn down the TV volume when watching a DVD and use your headphones instead. – Reason being that SCART also transmits audio to your TV.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
