Re: Compact disc hits 25th birthday

Return of the Space Cowboy - Jamiroquai
It was my first CD (also my only CD to get damaged, after the disc fell out of the case, landed on my desk at uni and split in to 2 pieces - never seen a CD do that), quickly replaced it though

Re: Compact disc hits 25th birthday

I think I was a bit late buying my first CD's, never been an early adopter. I had a wad of cash so went and got a Rotel player from Sound Advice in Loughboro' then headed into Brum an' got these.
Tom Waits - Bone Machine
Miles Davis - Milestones
Gary Clark -Ten Short Songs About Love
Neil Young - Unplugged
plus a couple of others that I'm bu####ed if I can remember.Apart from the Miles Davis I don't think any of them have been out of the cupboard for 10 years or more

Nope. I hated it on CD.

Re: Compact disc hits 25th birthday

What The Story Morning Glory by Oasis and the Help charity record. Bought on the same day as I bought my first CD player.

EDIT: It was actually the day Morning Glory was released so I can date it to October 2nd 1995.

having had this very thought yesterday i listened to it last night for the first time in years. it's not bad, but Jon Bon Jovi's still a tit!

Re: Compact disc hits 25th birthday

I think it says it all about CD's current plight that the whole 'it's been 25 years' has been on the news. I mean so what? Did we celebrate 25 years of vinyl, 25 years of VHS (God I hope not!), 25 years of cassettes? All of which in their own way revolutionised the way we listen and watch.

CD's launch signalled some of the worst ripping off of people of all time, with millions of shoddy re-issues, poor quality mastering, and lie after lie about CD's performance and durability. Yes I still have some old CD's, but I won't play them (they've been child attacked) for fear of what they will do to the player!

In reality, the Golden age of CD passed very quickly, with top quality mastering in the mid 90's soon giving way to the current trend of clipped 'CDs for ripping'.
