new 2meg cable install tomorrow

Going to help someone setup their 2meg cable connection tomorrow evening after the engineer has done his bit (hopefully). I have gathered from other sources that the modem needs a one time registration process, and that this can be done manually by logging into the IP address 80.5.178.26, and then some other details entered. What i dont have is the serial number i need to enter for an ex-telewest area. Just wondering if anyone has done it this way and made a note of this number?.

I want to avoid the VM setup cd at all costs, as i;ve already had a bad run-in with this on another pc, and that 25p pm helpline could hurt a lot.

you should not have to do a thing. the engineer should leave with the net working and as long as he has connected the modem to the pc by network card and not usb there is not any need for drivers or a cd its just plug it in and away you go

AFAIK, the engineer checks the modem powers up, and is receiving the cable signal, but doesent have anything to do with plugging it into the PC. I did a Blueyonder install back end of last year, and the modem was already registered, plugged the ethernet in and was good to go. But now i've been told you have to register the modem, the first time you install it.

Had VM cable b'band installed in May this year, and as above, the "engineer" doens't do naff all - plugs the modem into the power supply, attaches the coax cable, checks the lights come on, then hands you an ethernet cable and a CD and says goodbye!

They are then supposed to "sign off" on their laptop, and once signed off, your net connection becomes active. YOu plug in the ethernet cable, stick in the CD and follow the instructions....

Sadly my "engineer" didn't sign off, so I had to ring up after the set up CD failed to get it working.... Of course I had put in details by this point, which I then wasn't allowed to reuse, so I ended up without the email address I wanted!

Is this signing off process supposed to register the modem, or is that still to be done afterwards?

From what I remember, it's to register the modem, and to inform their connections department to allow to recieve b'band.... Basically to turn it on!

they have changed the install then

had mine put in last may although it was still blueyonder then i would not have thought there would have been the same now. they installed the modem hooked it up to the pc and made sure it worked the cheeky git even change my home page to blueyonder.co.uk lol

Arrived there just as the engineer(s) were finishing up, and yes, you do have to install it yourself. The cynic in me would say that if most people were going to have any problems, then it would be at the point of using the setup cd etc, and then have to ring the 25p per minute helpline. Hmmm
