Re: Blu Ray AV1 question
I know Sony were moving over to AV1 for future releases. The other film studios may be using it.
It should be standard soon enough.
50gb discs will more than likely only be used if the movie data needs the space.

I've not had any yet, although Fifth Element remastered is in the post to me.
The only double layer I found was Pearl Harbour and that was mpeg.

Short answer - NO.
There is stil a mixture of VC-1, AVC (Mpeg-4) and Mpeg-2 titles being released on both 50Gb and 25Gb media.

Re: Blu Ray AV1 question
Thanks for the replys.
It would be nice if we were given some info on how the film is encoded on the back of the packaing,,, I have both HDDVD and Blu-Ray and think that HDDVD usualy wins on the picture quality for me, guess thats becuase all HDDVD are encoded using VC1. But I guess thats just my opinion

Check out the title/review info on hidefdigest.com it provides details of codec and media type for many titles.
BTW not all HD DVD's use VC-1.

Re: Blu Ray AV1 question
look here
http://www.blu-raystats.com/
45 50Gb AVC discs
25 25Gb AVC discs
25 50Gb VC1 discs
36 25Gb VC1 discs
33 50Gb mpeg2 discs
112 25Gb mpeg2 discs
If you check the release dates you will see most of the MPEG2 were in 2006. The trend is away from MPEG2

Thanks for that.Very informative, Now I can decide whether to get a film on Blu-Ray or HDDVD. If it is available on both formats I guess unless its Double layerd or VC-1 encoded i will go the HDDVD way. I Guess AVC is Mpeg4??

Re: Blu Ray AV1 question
if its on both formats, like warner, then it will be vc1 on both, as warner use the same encoding for both
if its paramount and a new release its more likely to be avc optimised for BD, so higher bitrate
