Hubphone won't stop charging

Picked the homehub phone (model 1010) out of its charging cradle two days ago and found it to be pretty hot at the base where it slips into the charger. The screen on the phone was only displaying the bottom half of the usual wallpaper too. Thinking I had placed it wrongly in the charger in the first place I replaced the handset into the cradle and left it all day to charge. Around 12 hours later I saw it was still charging. It was the same in the morning: still charging. Very strange. So I put another set of rechargable batteries in the phone. Same result - still displaying continuously charging. The phone does actually work and the batteries do now have a charge in them. But when replaced in the cradle (the result is the same when I try the plug-in charger that came with the hub) the hubphone again displays that it still charging! Anybody know what the problem is?
