Bad colour cartridge?

Hi,
i have a HP5150 printer and the colour cartridge (No57) is only printing in magenta.
Ink levels are reported as fine and it worked ok in the past.
It was bought from Cartridge City and I have noticed when replacing them that the printer plays up for a while.
Im trying to find out if it is more likely the cartridge than the printer before i buy a new one,any ideas please
thanks
