DV78 drive issue?

I have been enjoying my DV 78 for a couple of years now and have been very pleased with it. I found that it had a few issues with some newly bought cd's but I think that was the cd's at fault as replacements worked fine.

I have recently noticed issues playing dvd's, sometimes when playing a dvd I get breif pauses that are a bit like a layer change but far more frequent. This issue can get quite annoying when trying to watch something with large amounts of dialogue.

Does this sound like my drives on its way out? Has anybody else had a problem like this?

Its not dirty discs as the dvd's are brand new, Im going to try a cd lens cleaner but I doubt that is the issue.

Any advice would be appreciated, I want to try and avoid having to save up for a 139

Re: DV78 drive issue?

I had the same issue with my DV78 about a year ago and it progressively got worse. I had to have the laser replaced (so I was told). $350 CDN (after warranty expired) later it works great and still works great. I still have it but have since upgraded to the DV137.

Re: DV78 drive issue?

Sounds ominious

I will leave it for the moment and see if it gets any worse.

Anyone in the UK know the rough price of a replacement laser?

Re: DV78 drive issue?

Done through Arcam and your dealer you are looking at about £230 inc. VAT.

Re: DV78 drive issue?

Thanks for that Crusty, I think I will leave it a while and see if it gets any worse before commiting to a new laser or DV139.

Supposed to be saving for a house/flat not a 139

Re: DV78 drive issue?

Weird i got back tonight and tried to play a DVD and it came up saying invalid region. I put the multi region code back in and its working again, a bit odd that its managed to upset its regions without me doing anything to it

Im hoping these are just random issues as I really really cant afford to upgrade right now.
