I have been running my Vodafone 1605 (aka HTC TyTN) with a 3 SIM on both 2G and 3G networks and it works fine. However I haven't been using it for voice very much, mainly email and other data services. When I have made voice calls they have been fine.
HOWEVER, if you plan to go aboard and use data services, do NOT go for 3. 3 only supports data in countries where they own the network (Austria, Italy and a few others) and they don't let you roam onto other people's 2G networks for data. But voice works well abroad.

Re: HTC on the 3 Network
But on the flipside, if you do go to a country with a 3 network in it, then your voice calls from the UK are free and calls back to the UK come out of your inclusive minutes.

Re: HTC on the 3 Network
I'm going to add a little extra slightly on/off topic as well.
If you haven't already bought your HTC then I would strongly recommend you google HTC and "problem". HTC phones are excellent on functionality and rubbish on reliability/longevity. HTC's build quality is well documented all over the net and lets just say, its poor at best. I speak from experience on this after owning two HTC phones and would never own another one.
Of course, there are peolpe who have owned a TyTN and never had a problem, myself, I have had 3 hardware faults on mine and its been treated with velvet gloves and laid to bed at night in Andrex tripple quilt! My Blueangel/MDA 3 gave up as well, the speaker stopped working.
If you can wait, i would strongly suggest you do and go for an I-Mate Ultimate. Depending on which model you want they will be available from next month through to January/Feb next year (the 5150 & 9150 are the delayed ones). Contrary to popular belief, whilst HTC did make all of I-Mates phones (and hence had the same hardware issues) the Ultimate range are being made by a diferent company - Japanese I believe.
If you can't wait, then take a look at the Tosh G900 which I use or the new/very soon to be release GloFish. The Tosh did have a major software sleep, won't wake up bug but this was fixed two week after release with a patch being on the tosh website. In my opinion, not a bad turn-around time and since then, bar the rubbish battery life (800x480 screen so to be expected) its been working fine.
Good luck with your new phone/network though

Re: HTC on the 3 Network
No problem
The battery life if setup for constant active sync (Exchange push email) is rubbish. Four hours to six was all I could hope for.
I have now changed to pull pop/smtp mail (as this also supports html, unlike most Exchange boxes) and this pulls email every 15minutes. Combine this with some almost constant surfing today following the cricket score and its lasted all day. Also need to add that I am within Heathrows T5 which is basicaly a huge Faraday cage and this is obviously going to hinder reception forcing the phone to use a higher setting.
All in all, as long as not using Push email, you should be ok.
I got mine from Expansys. G900 on Expansys
