Speaker Placement

Hi,
A quick question, as I am quite new to the world of AV I have a question regarding speakers.
I have the panansonic SCHT17 the speakers are quite large, not a problem for the rears but the fronts are a tight fit. I was thinking about upgrading my TV to 42 inch but the front speakers would no way fit next to the tv.
Therefore is it ok to buy some second hand bookshelf panny speakers, whether they are rear or front surrounds and attach them to the front connectors of the receiver.
Your help is appreciated.
Regards
Jason
