Just moved to BT and I am a little bit worried

Ok,

With Tiscali buying Pipex, (I am a Nildram customer (part of Pipex)), and with previous with Tiscali I obtained my MAC code from Nildram, and signed up with BT (rightly or wrongly) the service is due to go live this Friday the 20th.

However BT estimate a speed of 2M however I am less than 100 meters from the exchange and currently enjoy an 8M service, I am connected to the exchange at 8192 Kbps and a speed test gives a result of about 6.8Mbps.

I was under the impression that if I enjoyed 8M with Nildram I could reasonably expect an 8M service with BT.

Selected BT total Broadband Option 3.

Any thoughts anyone ?

Re: Just moved to BT and I am a little bit worried

Sounds like someone is quoting from the BT Wholesale checker which usually says something like:

"Our initial tests indicate you can receive a 2Mbps service on ADSL"

"You may also be able to get speeds of up to 7.1Mbps on ADSL Max"

The second paragraph often gets overlooked.

Re: Just moved to BT and I am a little bit worried

So I spoke to BT they say there line test results indicate a speed of 2Mbps strange as I currently have 8Mbps. I but my number into the BT broadband checker it also said 2Mbps. So I entered some of my neighbours numbers into the speed checker they all returned 8Mbps. So I got some stats from my router, is this good or bad ?

adslctl info --stats

adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status

Re: Just moved to BT and I am a little bit worried

Well if those stats are correct you have a very good line indeed. You either have a very good quality line or live very close to your exchange.

It sounds like it could be a data base error in the BT line checker.

Just to clarify please enter phone number HERE and paste the results back here (minus your phone number at the top).

At the end of the day it should not really matter so long as you get ADSL max, as it will sync with the exchange as fast as your line will allow regardless of what any checkers say.

Re: Just moved to BT and I am a little bit worried

Hi,

I live very close to the exchange it is about 100m away, I can see out the window. Anyhow I get the following information from the link.

"Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 2Mbps or greater.

The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Thank you for your interest."

Re: Just moved to BT and I am a little bit worried

Definately sounds like a data base error. As I said should not be a problem so long as it is ADSL max you are getting. Just make sure they dont put you onto a 2Mb fixed service.
