VM is just a complete joke

Having had my bb via ntl for 7 years now since vm took over its just awful and I think I need to look at other options now, ive always had the top tier package and am currently on 10mb (not upped to 20mb in my area yet), yet I barely get more than 4mb, most of the time its 1.5/2mb. I will not phone there no-help line at 25ppm as a mate did this and for nearly 20 mins got some dumb bint who couldnt sort out anything, these so called tech people just read off scripts i;m sure:suicide:

i've found improvements on my d/l on BB and ADSL.

How do you know if you havent even phoned them?:rolleyes:If it is their fault they will refund you the cost of the call anyway so if you are so sure why not ring them?

I wouldnt even contemplate ringing them beacause I know the problem is on their side, not mine. I have a mate on the other side of town with exactly the same problem and another in the next town with the same. As it happens one of them rang the no-help line and guess what? he was put through to some stupid bint who did nothing except go through the usual crap - reboot modem, pc, router etc etc, this seems to be their answer to everything, anyway after nearly 20 mins he was no nearer and then she suddenly told him that there is a local problem with a due date to be fixed by 22nd!!!

Just because there is a fault effecting your mate on the other side of town,that does not mean that the same problem is definitley effecting you.

Your choice though,if you are happy to wait till the 22nd,then see your mates problem resolved and yours still continuing Im sure you will be back on here saying you have been waiting all that time and your problem still isnt resolved.:smashin:

Dont quite think you are getting what i'm saying, even though we are on different sides of town it is the same problem which was confirmed by the person at VM, its a problem on my whole side of the county hence my mate 5 miles away in the next town having the same problem. When they fix it on the 22nd my connection will be ok again, simple as that.

Many people have had success by changing the proxy that they are using to connect. many people have had sucess using colchester or belfast proxies. you can check if it works here

put a tick in the proxy server box then click advanced
in the http box enter one of the proxys from below EG: bagu-cache-2.server.ntli.net Always use PORT 8080
click ok and then browse the web see if theres any difference if not try another proxy
(if the net doesnt work after u enter a proxy try a different one also to turn proxy off just repeat the first few steps and untick the proxy server box)

I had some problems a month or so ago as I was getting very low speeds. I called VM and spoke to the usual Indian call centre bloke who was clueless - I was on the phone for an hour. I called back and luckily got through to the UK centre. The guy told me to login to my modem (not router) and check the settings. On the first page was a huge 12 or so digit number - something like 395000000000000 - or along those lines. He said if you have a 5 at the end, so 3950000000005 to delete it and put a 0 - it worked brilliantly.

I would be wary about specifying any proxies because I believe they are in the proccess of "turning them all off".Admittedly if you are using a proxy and it stops working the only downside would be that you would lose connection until you went and unspecified it but just be aware that soon they will no longer be using proxies full stop.:smashin:

Dont quite think you are getting what i'm saying, even though we are on different sides of town it is the same problem which was confirmed by the person at VM, its a problem on my whole side of the county hence my mate 5 miles away in the next town having the same problem. When they fix it on the 22nd my connection will be ok again, simple as that.

A couple of years ago I had a similar issue (albeit with slower speeds at the time). A quick phonecall sorted it out - apparently there are a number of channels to each locations across which users are balanced. Sometimes the balancing software goes a bit wrong and everyone gets stuck on the same channel - slowing down speeds. They sorted it in a couple of minutes.

Alternatively post on this site - http://www.chetnet.co.uk/portal/ - it's run by (I think old) ntl engineers who really know their stuff are are really helpful.

If you know they're in the wrong, but you don't phone or email them to tell them, then its a tad immature to rant about why they wont sort it out.

VM are traffic shaping - hence the slow speeds. I pay £25 a month for 4Mb connection, and most nights recently, at peak times, I'm lucky if I'm getting more than 470k!! I'm lucky tonight.... nearly 600k!!

I'm totally disgusted with VM. I used to have a rock solid 4Mb connection 24/7 when it was NTL... which is what I am paying for.... I won't be paying VM much longer!! :mad:

and before anyone else says why dont you phone them, my mate spent 20 mins talking to someone at vm and the problem at their end was brought up by the vm bint after 20 mins, hence the call cost him a fiver, i'm not going to be doing that when he has been told that it is a vm problem to be fixed by 22nd, why should i phone them:suicide:

Its been confirmed by VM as a fault at their end, so its not my fault as you state. Come the 22nd it should be fixed but my main point really I suppose is that after years of great service from ntl now its just a joke, worse than ever.

Sadly I have to agree. I was getting dreadful ping rates when online gaming with Virgin ADSL and my download speeds were awful.

I went through various communications with Virgin, had my line tested by BT who confirmed there was nothing wrong. Virgin didn't seem (or want) to admit the problem was with their service.

The final straw was last weekend when I was getting approx 128kb/s download which is only just better than dial up!!!

Got my MAC and left and am now getting healthy speed and more importantly, really low ping rates.

It's disappointing as when I first joined Virgin they were great but in the last year or so their internet service has really gone downhill in my opinion.

You still seem to have failed to grasp(or just choose to totally ignore) the fact that if you call their tech support line and as in this case it is a fault their end or with their equipment they will refund the cost of the call immediatley.Or you could just call their server status line which is free on 0800 0824315.

Just a side note,but from what you have said,the people your friends spoke to diagnosed the problem correctly,and correctly advised when the fault would be resolved-that "no help line" sounds really useless:rolleyes:

I was referring to the fact that your friend called technical support,had his problem correctly diagnosed,was advised when it would be resolved,and then the issue was resolved at that time yet you still choose to refer to them as the "non help line" and said god help anyone that has to phone them:confused: It sounds like they did an ok job to me.

The VM 8mbps service was topping out at 2.1mbps and going as low as 20kbps at times!!

I was told in no uncertain terms that the maximum line speed I could get was 2mbps, and that slow speeds at peak times were part of the service and unavoidable.

Despite the fact that running the details I get from my router re: my line quality through a tool that calculates your theoretical maximum speed says I should be able to get 8mbps.


Now, bearing all this in mind, I was quite surprised when, after reconnecting multiple times, I suddenly found my newsreader downloading at a constant 6mbps early one morning!!

A few days later I downloaded the EVE client, and that was romping away at the full 8mbps, I even have a screenshot to prove it!!


So in summary, the information given to me by VM was ********. The reason for the slow speeds in most cases is not temporary service problems, it's oversaturation of the equipment they own/rent from BT, and could be quite simply solved if VM were willing to put more money down on the line.

Having had my bb via ntl for 7 years now since vm took over its just awful and I think I need to look at other options now, ive always had the top tier package and am currently on 10mb (not upped to 20mb in my area yet), yet I barely get more than 4mb, most of the time its 1.5/2mb. I will not phone there no-help line at 25ppm as a mate did this and for nearly 20 mins got some dumb bint who couldnt sort out anything, these so called tech people just read off scripts i;m sure:suicide:

I wouldnt even contemplate ringing them beacause I know the problem is on their side, not mine. I have a mate on the other side of town with exactly the same problem and another in the next town with the same. As it happens one of them rang the no-help line and guess what? he was put through to some stupid bint who did nothing except go through the usual crap - reboot modem, pc, router etc etc, this seems to be their answer to everything, anyway after nearly 20 mins he was no nearer and then she suddenly told him that there is a local problem with a due date to be fixed by 22nd!!!

Obviousy your problems were related to ADSL. This thread has been mostly about the cable side of things. VM ADSL is way oversubscribed though. Whether BT Wholesale over charge or not is debatable, but it's no excuse for the terrible service they provide as other ISPs manage it. As you say they need to invest in some more central pipes to keep up with demand.

For 4 weeks now my VM BB has been on the blink - literally speaking the Sync light on the modem just flashes and I can't get a internet connection. So far I've had 3 technicians come out.
The first time the internet service happened to be working so he couldn't find any problem,
The second time it wasn't working and he changed the connection outside on my road from the main router - this provided internet service for 4 days and then the same problem returned.
The third technician came yesterday but again the modem was working and I was receiving the internet and he couldn't find anything wrong.
Then yesterday evening it was back on the blink and I wasn't recieving a connection.
I've booked my 4th technician for this afternoon although at present my connection was working. Each time I've had to call their outpost in India who have no idea what they're doing.
The technicians don't have a clue what to do!

your signal should be 31db...25db and you will lose your connection in peak times.
