hi folks.

i have 4mb vm broadband and have the flat silver ntl modem with the black face. it is connected to my belkin wireless router via ethernet.

the other evening my internet connection was running ridiculously slow so i logged on to speedtest.net. turned out my download speed was peaking at only 175kb/s sometimes only 75kb/s with an upload speed of 385kb/s.

tried it at 7am the following morning and everything was fine. download 3916kb/s and upload 385kb/s.

repeated it last night. was as slow as the previous night and have just tried again now and is running fine.

so, am i being throttled or could it be a problem with the service or my wireless router??

any help would be appreciated:smashin:

Well I would test it wired just to rule out any equipment problems but to be honest it sounds to me like the effects of throttling or contention or maybe even a combination of both. This is what VM say their policy is for the L service:
Broadband Size: L
During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: L package download at least 750MB of traffic each.

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 2Mb, with their upload speed set to 192Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied

I have exactly the same problems as you with my 4meg connection, and the same throttled speeds during peak times.

They say they are only throttling the the worst 5% of downloaders which is certainly not me so they are obviously lying.

I thinksomething fishy is going on with VM. Have been with Virgin broadband for ~ 2 years. Since the switch to VM my download speeds have plummeted. At peak times I am getting little better than dial up speeds.

Have checked that all settings are OK at my end.

After sending numerous emails and making numerous phone calls to vm they have checked my line and found "no problem". There explaination is just " a lot of local traffic". I think this is balls.

I only use the net for 30 mins a dya and don't download big files.

I suspect they have just turned the service down a bit or are paying for less bandwidth.
