Some of you may be aware that I have just built a new HTPC (Pictures to come if ever it gets completed).
I have just installed this drive, and it works perfectly as a normal DVD player. It does however NOT work as a HD DVD drive.......
Before any smart a+* replies with a RTFM comment, it came with no manual or driver disk.
As you are aware, windows XP does the installing.
I was sceptical of this information (it being a HDDVD and new technology), but went ahead and slapped it into my gaming rig.
As before, it gets recognised, but this time it reads the HDDVD in the drive and plays perfectly in PowerDVD.
Now, this proves the disk, and drive are fine.
What have I done wrong in my HTPC rig I ask you????!!!!????
The only thing I can think of is that my ICT technician that installed windows for me installed it using the HDDVD drive, not the normal one I wanted him to. Would this have made a difference????
:lease:

Further info:
The HTPC only sees it as a CD drive, the gaming platform = DVD.
To rub salt into the wound autoloads PowerDVD when it gets recognised........:(

Azzin, on another forum I "frequent" you can add sub-titles to the users names.
I don't know what I would add under yours, but it coulod be:
"The Main Man"
or maybe;
"The saviour"
I think you get the message.
You da BOMB!!!! :smashin:
LOL, I installed that stupid XBOX file months ago on the gaming rig when I was thinking of buying the external drive. That's why it worked upstairs!
THANK YOU very much (the Mrs would probably thank you even more)!!!
Just for the record, at the moment a basic Fatal1ty Motherboard IS ALL YOU NEED TO RUN HDDVDS.
Runs silky smooth with no add in cards whatsoever.
I'll be posting in a couple of weeks my build,
thanks again dude,
Bretto.....
Good stuff, glad you're all sorted. :smashin:
Now, go and do two things:
1) Go and enjoy your HD loveliness.
2) Post some pics up of your setup!
Any experience of that Toshiba HD-DVD drive running on Vista?
As you can see the H802A is part of my plans for my build below.
Does the Toshiba HD-DVD drive support HDCP?
I can not find this on Toshiba's homepage

No problems on Vista here. :smashin:
Azzin, do you use AnyDVD to remove the HDCP or are you running HDCP?

I'm a little on the fence right now, partly due to cost, 'cos I'll also need to buy PowerDVD Ultra or similar as well. And even then, I'll need an HD audio solution as well.
May I ask where you're getting a dual format player? Blu-ray and HD-DVD?

hi im not getting dual format dude . Pioneer bd 202 is blue ray . Its not that i think blue ray win in the end or viccy vercy but most titles i want r on that media . Plus with set up i got should just plonk drive in and im all good . Once thats going ok will invest in HDDVD as price 4 them is dropping all the way . At the end of the day if the pioneer does not work out just gonna get ps3 and be done with it lol

I have the following specs;
Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3r (On board Hidef audio (sp/dif out))
Pentium E2140 (OC to 2.6Ghz (333x8))
Radeon 2400HD
SD-H802A
2GB 666mhz Ram
I have my system set up as above however the HD playback (Bourne Supremacy) is particularly bad. I have two new sticks of 800mhz Ram arriving soon to increase my OC on the E2140, short of buying a new processor is thereanything i can do? The HD advisor from Power DVD gives me green lights.
Oh and big thanks to Azzin for getting my drive recognised properly!

How do you mean in bad? In quailty or playing like a slideshow.
If its playing funny try enable hardware acceleration from powedvd options. This will lt the 2400 do some work :)

The Cpu usage is around 20% the picture goes blocky on the main title bit which goes blocky and sporadically in a film.
Need to get it running smoothly befoe the wife can be impressed.

Shouldn't be playing like that at 20%. With HA off mine goes to around 90% and plays perfect.
Which version of ATi CCC are you using?
PowerDVD version?
I would just uninstall powerdvd and the ATi drivers and then run CCleaner to make sure and once its found any files get rid of them and rerun CCleaner to make sure. Give it a reboot and reinstalled powerdvd and install the latest 3516 build and latest ATi drivers 7.11 which just got released earlier today.

I have never seen powerdvd being asking for a update. If you do right click and click on about you should see licensed to if you click on that will load another page and give you version details if you just paste that here so i can see if we running the same version.

The chip should be able to hand it.
To find out just play a movie. come out of full screen mode in powerdvd and call up the task manager by right clicking the task bar and choosing task manager. Go to the performance tab and let us know your cpu usage. Leave it running for while.

It is only about 20% or so doesnt really rise above. I have 2gb RAM and when running the swap file goes to around 800MB. I am wondering may it be the disc but it looks clean with no smudges

Nothing is wrong with your cpu then. Have you tried with another movie? Am thinking maybe under filter is causing problems with powerdvd. I would go through add and remove and find useless codec packs and get rid of them and run ccleaner to make sure its gone.
As a last resort i would do a clean reinstall of the OS.
pigboy306

only filter pack i have in is FFDshow. It is installed on Windows MCE which is only a few days old install.
Thanks for your advice BTW

ahaaaa. Now I still have my original ATI 2400HD installed but i installed the Avivo software from this page http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=mce/radeonxavivo-mce
Now hddvd playback is smooth but processor usage is upto 50%
When i right click in playback the Hardware acceleration button is greyed out on stop it is selected. The advanced buttons has more options when in playback.
Any suggestion as to what my options should be in CCC and in Powerdvd

Sounds like its decoding in software mode. I like it this way, i asked in avs forum and nearly all that replied back said it give better results. But you need to change the quality to BEST while the video is playing back.

While the video is playing. Right click then go config then click on the video tab then you will see advanced button at the bottom go into this and after i think the tab is called Quality and you can set it from here.

You won't be able to use hardware acceleration as the ATi HD 2400 doesn't support it, only the 2600 and above does. That's all I know unfortunately so can't help with the actual problem I just thought I'd let you know about that. Hope you get it sorted soon.

I know I've read it on these forums as well that hardware acceleration doesn't work with the 2400 but as you say it does say it on their own page, maybe it just doesn't work with Power DVD. Do a search within the graphics cards section as that's where I've seen other people talk about it.

It wasn't either of those but I tried looking and can't find it for the life of me, I must've been getting confused with a different problem however it does seem a lot of people have had the same problems as you getting hardware acceleration to work. I have the 2600XT and the option is available for me to use but I haven't got a HD or Blu-Ray drive yet so haven't tested it.

If playback was fine with Anydvd, then there is some issues with the copy protection on your pc.
