Mac Mini ??

I currently have a desktop PC and a couple of PC laptops. I built the deskptop PC a few years ago and now is getting a bit long in the tooth.

The family mostly uses the laptops anyway but I would still like to have a deskptop PC for photo editing or downloading and editing home videos.

Would the Mac Mini be a suitable deskptop computer as described ?

Re: Mac Mini ??

Do you have a decent monitor already? As if not, I would recommend holding on for the next revision of the iMac (expected soon) and strongly consider one of those over a Mac Mini.

The Mac Minis are also overdue an upgrade/price drop (there are some rumors they may be dropped, not sure about that mind).

Re: Mac Mini ??

I have a current montior 19" CRT but I will probable upgrade to a 20" LCD for approx £140.

I would prefer the flexibility of having a separate monitor as I may want to plug in my old PC as I may use it as a server.

Also, a Mac Mini + seprate monitor appears to be cheaper htan an equivalent iMac i.e. 20" monitor.

I say that the Mac Mini is due an upgrade, but if they discontinue it, there not be an upgrade. What do people think ?

Re: Mac Mini ??

Its gonna be so sad if they drop the mini, its been my favourite apple product of the last few years. I have a G4 1.5 mini and its absolutely great. Love the flexibility of it compared to my 20" iMac. So easy to just unplug it and whack it on the plasma. With airport and bluetooth being built in its a great little computer.

Current models are looking a bit dated and overpriced but hopefully they will either drop the price or announce a new mini revision. Hope the rumours are not true. Especially with the price of 22" LCD's dropping so fast its nice to pic and choose screens rather than being stuck with the one thats built into iMacs (not that the screens are bad in anyway) as they don't allow external inputs like other computers/360/PS3 etc

Re: Mac Mini ??

If you get a cheap Mac Mini and up the RAM to 1GB or 2GB with a 20" monitor you'll be sorted. iMovie comes with the computer and is perfect for editing home videos.

Re: Mac Mini ??

The Mini's are awesome! Was my first Mac and I still love them even though I don't have one anymore.

Should have seen my parents faces when they checked on my house while I was holiday when they said to me "your apple as been stolen!". My reply, "Its in my sock drawer"

Priceless!
