Painted Screen - WOW!

Hi guys,

I just wanted to post my experance of doing a painted screen on a wall.

I have recently brought a brand new projector (to replace another one i had which is about 4/5 years old now)

My old one used an electric screen which i brought a while ago which was great. But the new projector is native widescreen so it wasent as big as I wanted it on the projector screen.

So I decided to paint a screen on the wall, and WOW I dont think ive ever seen such a good picture projected onto a screen, its is really good! Even better than on my electric screen I would say.

I basicly masked out the size of the screen I wanted (this was easy as just turned the projector on set the screen size i wanted and put masking tape around it on the wall.

After it was all masked up, I did 3 coats of 'Dulux Rich Matt, Brilliant White' paint (Although it is called matt paint , I think it gives a very slight vinyl type coating as it is wipeable apparently, and very thick when you pour it out) . I think the 3 coats are important. One coat isnt enough, 2 probably is, but just to be sure I did 3 . I used a standard roller with a fine weave (for a smothish finish).

Now for the screen border i used some thin strips of wood which i applied 2 coats of 'matt black' paint (Wilkos own brand). From research it seems matt black is definatly better than any type of satin/gloss black as that only reflects light.

I then cut the appropriate 45 degree angles and stuck the borders around the screen (using no more nails on a roll, this is a fairly new product I think and worked briliantly) (and it was 2 for £5 at Wilkos , instead of one roll for £4 somthing)

If anyone is thinking of doing somthing similar I highly recamend it, and recamend using the above materials as it has worked great for me.

Chris

So you painted your wall. Have you done extra work on the wall before painting such as filling (small holes) or you have a perfect smooth wall?

Re: Painted Screen - WOW!

Hi ya,

It was quite smooth (by smooth I mean no major discrepencies) - I did have to take out a few old wall plugs and fill in the holes made by them. then just sanded it down a bit.

Other than that nothing else needed to be done. Just rollered the paint streight on. (The roller creates a slight effect on the wall which is totaly unnoticable when an image is projected onto it. Perhaps it even gives it a better effect?

Nice job
I must admit given the choice this is the route i`d prefer to go but as I have a chiney breast in the way (and a plasma on the wall) I`ve had to use an electric screen.

Re: Painted Screen - WOW!

It certainly looks liek a cost effective way of creating a screen, good job

Did you consider specialist paints like Goo, which i keep hearing mentioned?

I wish i had a free wall to do this on

For about a second .

But I wanted to do it straight away and I thought screen goo was to expensive when i could possably achieve the same results with other paint.

I am VERY happy with the picture I am getting, and I cant see how screen goo would have given me any better picture. Its that good too my eyes.

That said I have never seen screen goo in action and it does apear to be well liked.

Re: Painted Screen - WOW!

Great setup, love the pics.

Are there any disadvantages to a painted screen over a manufactured one? (Besides encroaching chimney breasts and the like)

Im no expert, so cant really say.

Just was a good option for me as I had the wall space.

I have an electric screen aswell, and quality wise I prefer the painted screen.
