Re: Projector recommendations up to 10K
Hey, no, it's not for me. It's for a friend who wants me to put a cinema in. She has a lot more cash than I do. So we can spend 10K on a projector. 30-40K for the whole project.

If she's planning on spending a bit on the project I would suggest talking to a prof AV company for advice/design.

Re: Projector recommendations up to 10K
I'm thinking of the JVC to be honest. But wanted to hear views. By going to a vendor I'm going to get "partial" advice...I was hoping coming here might drive some interesting views.
I'll keep researching and start to build my list.

The JVC is very good but 136" may be pushing it IMO unless used with a high gain screen material and approriate room treatment. Even then you need to consider that output will reduce as the lamp ages. The use of a high gain screen introduces it's own issues as well.
The Projectiondesign Model III has high lumens capability and may be worth investigating.

Re: Projector recommendations up to 10K
Hi AVI, that one isn't any good for this application, needs to be full 1080p. However, you lumens point is well made. How about this one? A bit more expensive but what do you think?

That's is the one I was suggesting may be worth investigation. Yes it isn't cheap and may not be the best solution without knwoing the details of the project it may be overkllk. Some of the Sim2 products may be woth a look but the 3 chip 1080 is about 2-3x the price of the Projectiondesign Action III 1080. Maybe the 3000e or C3X (not 1080) are also worth a look as both are about £10k mark.
What is the throw distance ?

Will she be having a look at the projectors image before you buy it? I ask this because there is a vast difference between DLP and LCD, and if I was spending up to 10k on a projector I would want to see the differences.
My list of projectors to check out.
Panasonic PT AE1000
JVC DLA HD1
Sim2 D80
Sim2 D380 (Coming soon)
Sim2 HT3000

Re: Projector recommendations up to 10K
Hi, actually, she trusts me. She doesn't have time to look, believe it or not, so I have a budget to play with. Thinking about this I don't want to go mad on that basis either. I don't want LCD but happy with DLP It's quite a big room but only half of it is being used for this (screen pops down in the middle of the room).
So, my shortlist is:-
Sony Ruby (brighter than pearl?)
JVC DLA-HD1 (bright enough? :S)
Themescene HD81
Any others? Needs to be native 1920x1080p too.
Cheers!

Re: Projector recommendations up to 10K
Ruby isn't really much brighter than the Pearl and has a very expensive bulb that loses it's brightness very quickly. I'd steer clear of it to be honest.
Has you friend looked into screens with high gains? The da-lite high power, for example, plus the JVC could be the answer for her. That combination would also be much better value than a high lumen 1080p projector at the moment.

It's also worth factoring calibration in to the brightness equation. For example calibrating to D65 standard can significantly reduce lumens over the "published spec". The JVC quoted figure is "calibrated" but from measurements on AVS the Optoma drops significantly. IIRC the Ruby has a lower output that the Pearl calibrated and the Xenon lamp also drops off pretty quick i.e. less bright than the JVC. The Ruby lamp is expensive i.e. £500-£700 and it does not accept a 1080p/24 signal which is increasingly important for HD DVD/ Blu-ray.
I would also consider the Sim2 D80, HT380e and 9000e assuming your friend etc is not affected single chip DLP i.e. RBE, headaches etc. Also check out AVS as the Optoma HD81 appears to be plagued by reliability issues.
Also what is the throw and viewing distance likely to be ?

Re: Projector recommendations up to 10K
Thanks guys, AVI, for the input.
Gah this is getting more complicated. The room is 4.4 metres by 4.4 metres for the cinema room. The actual size is twice that in length but the screen is droping down in the middle of the room (sounds mad, but its the best configuration).
We definately want 1920x1080 native though. And it looks like brightness is key. The screen will be around 130 inches. Thinking of the Le Wing but have to see one first...because the centre speaker needs to drop down with the screen. Got a post elsewhere on screens!
So bottom line is need 1920x1080. HDMI etc and bright! Up to 10K really but getting worried about nothing fitting the bill...everything seems to have a fault...either too dim or unreliable! Nightmare

Markk. Your Sim2 D80 looks interesting. Might see if I can get a demo for that...
Cheers

The D80 has just dropped in price to about £4.5k. It's a nice PJ if you are not affected by RBE etc and don't mind the black level being a little hazy. I've not seen the new HT380 first hand but its new unishape lamp tech is suposed to impove black level, contrast and brighness (sounds good). At £6.5k it within your budget and may be a better overall solution.
