Optoma HD70 problem?

i bought one of these about a month ago now and i have been delighted with it however i dont know if this is the start of a problem. i have no luck at all when it comes to electronics as things normally die on me after a few months through no fault of my own. There is less than 24 hours on the bulb.

i have been busy in the last month doing my attic up into some sort of a cinema room and finally got it finished the other day. I bought a HD drive for my Xbox 360 (the 360 broke after having it for only 20 odd days by the way but i got a new one) and bought some HD DVDs today. I cant get sound through the Xbox yet as i need to buy a cable tomorrow but i couldn't resist having a look at what the picture was like on the DVDs i bought so i decided to put them on for 10 minutes without any sound. everything went as normal and the projector powered up. after being blown away by how good the picture looked i went through the power off process as normal and did a little dance of happiness in preparation for watching them with sound tomorrow. the count down started and finished with the screen going blank as it always does but this time the projector stayed on instead of going into standby. it just sounded like it normally sounds when i am watching a movie only without showing any picture now.

I waited a while hoping it would turn itself off eventually but it didnt so i had to switch it off at the wall which i know is a bad thing to do. I then waited a while again and turned it back on at it seemed fine. after a while i shut it down and this time it went through the count down and went to standby as it is supposed to do.

I was wondering if anybody who owns this has had this problem before and is it a sign that the thing is ready to die on me any day now?

Re: Optoma HD70 problem?

I had exactly the same problem with my HD72i... I figured that, as the lamp switched off and the fans kept running.... I gave it around 20 mins., the unit felt cold to the touch... then minimal harm was done to the lamp. However, the lamp did only last a couple of hundred hours after that - approx.1300 in all, considerably under the claimed 2000 - 3000. All projector manufacturers are way optomistic when it comes to lamp life in my opinion so It's hardly clear this is cause and effect.
If in doubt, call Optoma... but if the lamp does suddenly fail (unlikely), my bet is they'll deny liability.

Re: Optoma HD70 problem?

thanks for the reply. I have had the projector on a few times now since this happened and thankfully everything seems to be going as normal. hopefully it was just a minor glitch and it wont cause me problems any time soon.

Re: Optoma HD70 problem?

i have only ever had this happen to me on one occasion and all i did was power the unit down via the fused spur i feed it from. I just put it down as a glitch in the power off process. my unit is now 10 months old.
