Converting RAR file to Bin
Recently I bought an OPPO 981 dvd player which unfortunately needs firmware updates installed from time to time.Anyway I goit in touch with manufacturers and they sent me this email with the RAR download:
We would recommend downloading and installing the 00-0523 Firmware
(http://www.oppo.se/product_show.asp?...&show=download).
You will need to extract the file from the RAR archive then rename
"BE981-00-0523.BIN" to "935.BIN". You will then use a Data burning
program (such as Nero Burning ROM) to make a new "DATA CD" with "ISO
9660 Only (non-Joliet)" burning instructions in "Mode 1" and "Disc At
Once (DAO)" write type. Put the disc into the player and follow the
onscreen instructions.
Now I also downloaded Stuffit expander to do the conversion but found the file appeared within a VCL icon on the desktop (VCL is a media player prog) for some reason.I tried burning and suing this file without success so I removed the VCL prog and started again and ended up with a file on my desktop( icon the shape of a file).Clicking on that produced a window with a greyed out Stuffit icon(with Bin contents) and a separate "read me" icon.So far my efforts at renaming and burning ,whilst producing a result, (ie the cd burnt and there is content) my dvd player wont recognise it. So I must be doing something wrong in the burning /renaming procedure. First I look for some way of renaming it and the only way I can find is by right clicking the file and click "get info" and at the bottom where the file name is shown I change it to 935 BIN.Then I click "New burn folder" and drag the Bin file into the resulting cd burning icon in desktop .All well and good except as I said my player will not recognise the cd data( blank cd are cd -r which worked ok with another recording)The DVDp manufactureres claim the burning should work ok in Disc utilty but I cant get the file in there. Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Converting RAR file to Bin
Hi,
Unless I am missing the point here a *.rar file is just another compression technique that has been around way before winzip:
http://www.rarlab.com/
So I downloaded the *.rar and extracted the *.bin in a jiffy, if you still have problem then PM an e-mail address and I will fire across *.bin file (1.4mb) and the update step *.doc

Re: Converting RAR file to Bin
Hi,
Well if the player does not recognise the *.bin file then it is likely corrupt, decompress the *.rar with Winrar instead just to be sure and then just rename the *.bin file to 935.bin.
Once that is done (if you are running Window OS):
Right click on the 935.bin and select copy
The select to CD / DVD writer from device list and click Paste.
If all is good you should get a popup stating your files are ready to write to disk...pop in blank media and the 935.bin should then be on the root of the CD /DVD
If after all this the player still does not recognise the file, IMHO it it corrupt I and I would contact product support or we are missing a fundemental step :-)
*Note* I don't mean to teach a granmother to suck eggs with the above statements....just trying to be helpful that is all.

my MAC hasnt got the intel chip so no Windows just OSX. I downloaded Macrar which seems to work within Stuffit
Dont worry as I am pretty much a computer idiot - only been using one for the last 4 years and there are many aspects that elude me

at the risk of seeming stupid - again! How do I change the name? So far I have only be able to do it by clicking "get info" ( after mouse rt click) and then changing it there . But does it change it??

Re: Converting RAR file to Bin
Thois is the kind of respnse that winds me up .I got from Apple Discusions grp
When burning with Disk Utility, the file name doesn't matter, but you will have to change the extension to .img
Using the Finder's Burn Folder method doesn't burn a disk from the image, but makes a disk that contains the image file.
Neither Finder or Disc Utility Help tell me how to change a BIN file to IMG. Unforunately too many assume we all understand every aspect of puter usage

Re: Converting RAR file to Bin
I have finally worked out what was happening . My player wasn t recognising the burned cd (ie burned within Finder). The previous 1227B file ,which contained a 935 BIN file,I successfully burned because it was an ISO file which meant it would go straight into Disc Utility where i could also burn a cd and this cd was accepted by the player. So the question is why dont Oppo supply the 0523 BIn file as an ISO one( presumably containing a different 935 Bin file)? It would have saved a me a great deal of aggravation and time wastage I have no idea what an ISO file is .
