EF 50mm f1.8 - loose front section

Morning

I've got one of these lenses and the front section which extends when you focus is a bit loose

Is this common or is mine a dud?

Re: EF 50mm f1.8 - loose front section

When you say loose, is it just some free play? The EF50/1.8 is of poor build quality, mostly plastic but optically nice for the price. If it focus fine and does not feel like its going to come apart I would not worry too much about it.

If you need something better, the 50/1.4 is a much better build quality and optically better.

I can definitely wobble mine and it doesn't make a nice sound when you do it, but I wouldn't call it loose. Maybe yours is the same.
