Water Damage! - Need your help please.

Can today get any more

Just found that a bottle I use for lunch has busted in my bag. It happens to have a watterproof inside. Yep my camera was also inside my bag. Has anyone got any tips to fixing it ? Its a DSC-W17.

I did have to tip some water out of the camera itself.

Re: Water Damage! - Need your help please.

If it's just plain bottled water you should be OK. As long as the camera wasn't on, and you haven't tried to turn it on since.

Leave it for a couple of days somewhere warm and dry. See if you can get hold of some silica gel puches and leave them in a box with the camera.

Take the battery and memory card out too, and leave the doors open.

Fingers crossed.

Ahhh slight problem. While getting rid of the water and drying it off, I pressed the power on switch. It was bone dry. The camera never powered up I managed to switch it off.

From my experiences with consumer equipment, it takes up to a week before the water gets fully dried off. Powering the camera before that should be avoided. Just make sure you place the camera in a position such that any water droplets inside does not make its way to the lens or imaging sensor.

With bottled water at least you run a lesser risk of rust corrosion settling in.

Place the camera on a layer of soft cloth and leave it onto top of something warm. I put mine on top of the satellite receiver since it would not get too hot and its powered on 24x7. Works everytime for me.

And remember to take out both the main battery and the backup lithium cell battery plus your storage card. Leaving the battery compartment slightly open would help.

Re: Water Damage! - Need your help please.

Many many years ago I tipped squash over an Acorn Electron. After it had had a shower to remove the stickyness it lived in the airing cupboard for a bit and it worked fine after that, in fact we got it out a few years back & it was still working.

So maybe try the airing cupboard.

I dropped my new (at the time) 300mm VR lens into a canal.

Left it on the radiator for a week to dry out.

thought it was a gonna

Good as new now with no water marks.

Re: Water Damage! - Need your help please.

I tipped water over something electrical years ago ...cant remember what it was now.I accelerated the drying process by waving a hairdryer back and forth over it...I dont know if that would be any use though as its a sealed unit.

worth a try

All I have cover on it. Just wanted to try to see if I could get it working first. It has been drying out, checked today and the lense is now clear. Only problem I think I blew the camera when it powered on

Just wanted to give it a few more days before I go down the long road of the Insurance cover.
