Loud train

Having fun with long exposures in shutter priority mode. I'm not into trains, honest, but noticed that some fun could be had with the colours.

This one at 0.3s and f22, no filter, and sharpening & levels in Lightroom, plus reducing saturation on green and increasing vibrancy on orange and purple (could you guess?).

And this one is 0.5s at f16 with a polarising filter, no sharpening or other tweaking apart from a crop.

I have to say I am not overly happy with my 17-55 at f20 and f22. It seems to lose sharpness, so stuffing a filter on the front lets me keep f16ish and still get a decent long shutter speed.

Cheers!

Re: Loud train

Like em both but prefer the colours in the first shot. Will be giving that a bash one day! Never thought of a long exposure of a train in the day, have a couple at night though.

Re: Loud train

They're both pretty cool effects. You must have some brightly coloured trains?!! None of the navy GNER's we have!!

I like the way #2 nearly fades into nothing. Would have been better if there had been a total fade to no train and if those signal control boxes weren't there.

I found out from some calculator thing that the sharpness of the image beyond F9 will deteriorate due to diffraction. Couple this with the fact that the lens itself is actually sharpest from about F4-F7.2 and that's why its pretty horibble at F22.

I think I'm going to get myself an ND1000 (10stop ND) as I find that my ND8 is usually always used with an F22 aperture and I'm still not happy with exposure legnth. With an ND1000 I should be able to shoot at F9ish and still have lovely long exposure's in broad daylight!!

Re: Loud train

The second one for me. I do like the first one too though as it looks like it's a colourful snake going into a tunnel (must stay off the drugs!)

Re: Loud train

I had also expected a fairly dull coloured train, so was quite pleasantly surprised when I got these onto my PC and saw how the motion blur had brought the colours. out so well.

Ta for the info on apertures & sharpness by the way - some good detail in there. I might look into a really dark filter as well.

The 1st pic is a train going into the tunnel, and the 2nd pic is a train coming out. The longer shutter speed on the 2nd one has effectively blurred the front of the train to nothing.

Re: Loud train

Yep, from what I've read, and this applies for all lenses, there's no point going past around f/16 due to diffraction causing softness.

There's a calculator thing here (2/3 down the page) and here.

Really like the pics. Wonder if train geeks could work out which company's trains they were?

Re: Loud train

Excellent effect caused by the long exposure, Tobers. Really nice colours too - your PP has worked well too.

Interesting subject too. I have thought of doing the night time light trail thing (It's on my list) but trains disappearing into tunnels, especially during the day, is a great idea.

Cheers.

Re: Loud train

Must have missed this one last night.

Really like the first one the shutter speed is spot on. any faster or slower just wouldn't have worked as nicely. The colour is fantastic too.

It would be tempting to position the camera really close to the track and use a remote release to fire the shutter hmmmmmmm

Re: Loud train

Yeah I missed it as well. They are nice looking images aren't they. I prefer the train in the second one myself.

Re: Loud train

Me too....

Nice shots Tobers

I prefer the first one, but think that the second one being on the other track makes the composition look better,in that, the train seems to enter the tunnel more centrally.

I did think of this but at the time I was standing on a very steep hillside in danger of rolling down the damned thing. To get there I'd walked what felt like 2 miles (probably 1 but it was very up & down), climbed a couple of fences and ploughed through 50m of thick bracken & heather. The things we do!! It isn't a very busy line though so that could be possible.

Re: Loud train

Definitely prefer No.2, because the less solid nature of the tail end of the train add's to the feeling of speed for me.

Great fun little shots
