Re: Windows Vista
i run photoshop cs2 on vista no problems not sure about 6 i dont see why it would have any problems i am yet to come across any software that doesnt run on my vista machine and to use a 64bit version of vista u need 64bit compatible hardware this will let you go above the 4gb ram limit on 32bit operating systems but driver support for 64bit is some what limited i would suggest getting the 32bit version if you are unsure.

Re: Windows Vista
Instead of buying Vista simply pop half your RAM out, loosen the CPU so it's failing to load half the time and throw a few £00 out of the window.
Seriously though, I recently dropped both copies of windows off my network and went back to XP. It's like having a new machine it boots so fast
I found CS2 to work ok on Vista but CS3 was terribly slow. I would seriously consider trialling Vista before you spend the money.
EDIT: If you do buy the OEM pack be 100% sure you want it on that machine *before* you install as it locks into hardware when you validate etc. If you suffer a hardware [mobo] etc failure then you need to get a new license

My new laptop came with Vista. Zoombrowser & the other software that came with my Canon eos400D runs fine, but most of my other (non photographic) software WILL NOT run on Vista, even in compatable mode. The burning programme on Vista has to have been made by a child as what would take me 2 minutes (often less) to burn with Nero took me 90 minutes by the time Vista had allowed me to burn in the way I wanted. I can see a club to maintain XP being formed in the future. Has anyone put Nero onto Vista & run it successfully, if so what version did you use?

Re: Windows Vista
I've run Nero [latest version] and it worked without error. I had to rename some random file though to avoid constant COM errors. I found even simple things like printer drivers for my new Canon were missing in Vista and not available for download!
Like I say, I have 2 copies and have gone back to MCE and XP.

Ah yes, I forgot. It would not let the programme recognize my EOS400D, however it recognized the EOS400D as a hard drive so I could download the pictures that way. Because the laptop came with Vista I'm going to put up with it, however had I bought Vista, I'd be back to XP like a shot. Can XP be loaded as well as Vista successfully?

Re: Windows Vista
I really enjoyed using the BETA version of Vista, but there was some problems and it did get stupidly slow to boot even after I turned off the sidebar and other stuff
When I was using it, zoombrowser worked fine, but it doesn't load up the whole automatic importing side of things. I had to do this manually or with a different program.
If you use photomatix be prepared to do a conversion about 10 times before it successfully completes without crashing. This was a strange one because for days it would be fine, and then the next series of days it would just keep crashing out
The whole vista interface is quite similar to XP, but it does look nicer, and when you first install is really nice to use, but at the moment I would leave it until next year and when all the software you use has been labelled vista compatitble before changing ship.

Re: Windows Vista
I'm just setting up 3 Vista Ultimate 32 bit PCs at the moment, and my advice would be to sit tight until the software/driver support improves a little.
I opted for 32 bit, as we had loads of problems with driver support for 64 bit XP.

My desktop is over five years old!

Re: Windows Vista
As previously said... i would get a trial version and dual boot your machine for a couple of weeks before spending money...
Vista consumes alot more resources than XP, i would say my laptop is now 50% slower than compared to xp.. which is annoying as its a top spec machine.. thus i dual boot and use Ubuntu 90% of the time cos its fast and free!

Re: Windows Vista
i bought a new laptop about 3 months ago with xp installed, i eventually got my vista upgrade disk about 2 weeks ago (thats another story ) i've read quite a few negative reports about vista, so i think it may be a good idea to wait a few months before changing to vista from xp, what do you think

I think that the first part of your post is quite factual
Stay well away from VISTA it's a complete heap of brown smelly stuff!
I'm fed up to the back teeth of it telling me that I don't have the authority to do what i want i'm fed up with it telling me that CS2 is not responding and the fact that it takes 10 mins for my laptop to boot up
it's back to XP for me I could have spent that £150 on part of a new lens
I hate it with a passion

Re: Windows Vista
2 days into Vista ownership...no serious problems yet
Turned off UAC as it was annoying me too much - also because it refused to run apps over the network at admin level
Vista+Office 2007+Symantec antivirus corporate edition+mdaemon outlook connector = 3 hours of hell. Eventually got them all talking to one another though.
CS3 - no problems as yet
Couldn't work out how to install Vista printer drivers on our Server 2003, so I'm running local drivers.
I managed to crash the sidebar once when installing something, and I've had one freeze on shutdown on 1 out of 3 PCs for no obvious reason.
Speed is excellent, boot up time quicker than XP, memory use shocking It ticks over with my normal background apps running at about 800MB! If you don't have 2Gb+, don't even think about it.

Vista is using 800MB RAM because it is preloading files it thinks you may need into memory in advance, in order to speed up execution. Plus it will hang onto files once in RAM rather than purge them. It is working intelligently to your benefit. That is why your speed is "excellent". Why would you want to pay for 2GB RAM and then only ever see 500MB used? That would just be money wasted.
FWIW I bought a Dell XPS M1710 laptop in January with XP MCE pre-installed and a free upgrade to Vista to be shipped. I have clean installed XP MCE and have also clean installed Vista Ultimate as a dual boot config. After some intital teething problems and a time to get used to the new interface I am now using Vista in preference to XP. I have left UAC on and rarely get troubled by it in daily use.
The only time I boot back to XP is to access my HP Bluetooth printer, for which there are no Vista drivers and never will be. I print very rarely - normally only once every few months - so it is no big deal.
I don't use Photoshop but Lightroom 1.0 and 1.1 run perfectly on either OS, as does all my Canon photographic software, Office 2003 and all my utility software.
At first I hated Vista but now I am used to it, it is my preferred choice over XP.
