Newsgroup access

Anyone know how to set up newsgroup access on Virgin Media?

I found some website which indicated that it is possible to access newsgroups on Virgin without a third-party browser, but a call to tech support got me nowhere. They suggested I get my 'friends' to help set it up!!!

Just don't want to start paying for a newsgroup download manager thingy.

PS. I'm using a Mac, although I'm sure I can apply basic principles of what to do from Windows...

Re: Newsgroup access

What do you want to use the newsgroups for, downloading binaries or participating in discussions? Depending on your primary use makes a bit of a difference with your choice of client.

If you've already picked a client out to use, then simply go to wherever you add the newsgroups server and use the address news.cable.ntlworld.com - you don't need a username or password.

Sorry if that's a bit vague... it's late (well, early) and I'm knackered! Let me know if you need more detailed info and I'll post when I'm a bit more awake

Edit: Oh - and port 119 if it asks (which should be the default for newsgroup servers anyway).

Re: Newsgroup access

Go and have a read at either the grabit or alt.binz websites where there are tutorials.

If you are ex Telewest then the server name is news.blueyonder.co.uk on port119 3 connections if I remember rightly. I use Thundernews as Telewest newsgroups coverage was poor.

Does that give access to usenet files like news.blueyonder.co.uk did with something like 3 day retention?

Re: Newsgroup access

Yes, 3 days retention is about all you'll get, but hey, it's free !
