M&K Advice

Consdering an M&K system to replace my Kef Q Series surround. This is because I have heard a system based on K4's which to be honest sounded far better for movies than my Kefs which is what they get used for.

My first question is whether anyone has any advise on whether the K or the Xenon Series offer better sound. My second question is whether anyone knows any dealers in the North West for M&K so I can go have a play.

Help would be really appreciated

Re: M&K Advise

A lot of Sevenoaks dealers are M&K stockists, so that may be a place to start looking.

PS. As this is actually the SUBWOOFER forum , any chance of giving us the low down on your CHT-15R. The CHTs don't seem to get mentioned much, so I'd be interested to know what it replaced, what you compared it to etc. Sorry if that's a bit nosey.

Re: M&K Advise

Looks like the speaker forum to me

Thanks for the Sevenoaks advise. They have a branch in Manchester so I will give them a call and see whether they can arrange a viewing and what they have in.

The CHT-15 is a beast of a sub. It replaced a KEF PSW3000 as the main sub in the KEF setup, with the KEF replacing the Energy sub that came in the speaker package. It goes very low and very loud with a good ammount of punch. Only downside is that it is not very acceptable with the partner

If anyone could please help with which M&K speaker series is theoretically better it would be very appreciated

Re: M&K Advise

Hi sibeer - The K series is M&K's starting point and are excellent speakers for movie viewing and can really be driven hard when needed, the Xenon speakers are even smaller but have a more refined tweeter and crossover compared to the K series and therefore the sound is more refined overall.

I suppose it does depend on you're budget but if you can i would recommend going higher up the range ie 650/750 or even 850 as i would say the Velodyne would be easier to intergrate with the bigger M&K's as the Xover point would be higher on the K/Xenon series but you would be looking at standard 80hz/THX Xover with the larger M&K's and therefore the 15" sub would be more suited at a lower xover point.

Re: M&K Advise

Thanks Recruit,

I am definately only interested in movie / game performance and I don't need anything smaller than the K series. As such are the refined and smaller Xenons a good idea? I would like to keep the size as wall mountables though and reasonable looking if posible.

My current choices seem to be either K17s up front with a pair of K4s at the back, LCR26s up front with Surrond 26s at the rear or maybe something from the 150 series at a push (bit steep for me though). It seems to be a big budget increase above that level with M&K and very hard to find second hand or ex-dem. I am in no rush and am going to find the right combo before collecting it through ebay, here, ex dem and other places for 2nd hand.

Re: M&K Advise

you could consider the Surround 55s, I picked up a pair 2nd hand for £350 and am v impressed with them for both films & multichannel audio (DVD-A of the 2nd Polyphonic Spree album is particularly good fun). Note that I have not heard the K series or Xenons for comparison.

Cheers
Matt

Re: M&K Advise

If you can find 150's or similar then you will have to re-consider the amplification as they demand alot more juice than say the Pioneer can give, at present i am running with a Denon AVC11XVA and that really is the minimum although i will be changeing once new batch of High End AV amps start appearing.

The Pioneer should be fine running the the K / Xenons and 650/750 and 850 withput any problems.

Re: M&K Advise

Well that whacks the 150's of the list as I am no where near ready for that level of expenditure

Re: M&K Advise

I have s85's with column's as my set-up. Awesome with movies!!

Look around the bay, there was some good deals from a company in sussex for m&k, also check ssav clearence section, different stores will ship usually.

Due to the M&K situation people are trying to offload so keep the search up!!

Re: M&K Advise

What is the "M&K situation?"

What is the alternative for similar sound and size?

Don't worry too much, you will still get superb performance with any of the above M&K speakers

Re: M&K Advise

Hi there.

I have the Xenon 36 LCR's and 26 surrounds setup and it sounds very good. I was worried when i bought them but after the first 5 seconds on playing them, all fear stopped.

Setup right with a sub (100Hz for me) thye are excellent speakers. Im using a VX850SF sub so yours should be even better.

Re: M&K Advise

I have given Sevenoaks a call and they have confirmed that M&K is no longer in the UK. I am putting out feelers for a Xenon set similar to Mr Bunty's, glad to here another happy customer. Sevenoaks seem to mainly have the K series, still interested as to whether you are better with a grade higher in Ks (i.e. K17) or a LCR26

With regard the companies problems I don't think speakers really need warranties TBH. If they work they work until you blow them. That is why they get such silly long warranties.

Re: M&K Advise

If you want quality, get the Best you can afford or, it's always "what if" that will be in your mind.
To my ears, if you want the best for movies go M&K!!!!

I would get the best I could afford. If I was you, that is!

Try putting a wanted ad on the forums, you may get lucky!
