Warner Bros whats the deal??
Hi
Not completely sure this is the right place to post but here goes.
I've bought several Warner Bros releases on blu ray and I can't believe how bad the picture is, whats going on??
The films are: Superman, Superman 2 Donner cut and superman returns, now I know the first two are older films but for gods sake they look worse then any of the DVD releases I have seen.
And why I'm having a dig at Warner, why aren't they releasing Smallville and Heroes on Blu-ray when these titles are coming on HD DVD shortly?
Thanks
Nigel

Re: Warner Bros whats the deal??
Here's a more detailed description of the poor picture qualitiy, The picture is full of dust specks/dirt, lots of picture noise/grain (although as stated the films are some thirty years old) and worst of all a complete lack of contrast making the picture look wasted out. The picture also looks very soft.
To be perfectly honest the Blu-ray release looks like a straight DVD transfer.
Cheers
Nigel

I only have Superman Returns on HD DVD and IMO it's a challenging movie for most displays. Much of it is dark and moody but that is the artistic intent and IIRC it was shot with HD cameras. I've seen this movie on a few displays and on some it looks very good and some it doesn't.
Maybe Warner are holding back on releasing some titles because of interactive features that require profile 1.1.

Re: Warner Bros whats the deal??
Yes SR is a difficult movie for wow factor on ANY HD format, the 'soft' style and blacks make it a difficult disc, but I think it is a good disc re being faithful to what I saw at the cinema. The DVD is the same.
The two older superman discs are faithful copies to the original, and are certainly better than my DVDs, but again they are limited by the quality of the print.
Ever release, whether Warner or Sony, HD DVD or Blu-ray, needs to be faithful to the original print. In some cases, that will include grain, perhaps a touch soft or mute / stylistic colours, these are often not the wow disc but if they are true to the original print then i think this is all we can realistically ask of any format.
Re some disc on HD DVD and not BD, then I suspect this is purely down to Blu-ray playing catch up on facilities as in Profile 1.1.

Heroes isn't done by Warner, it's done by Universal. So you'll be waiting a very long time for Blu-ray.

I don't have any of those, but as you say, there are 2 quite old films and one recent one which has become renown for being all that good in high def.
I have quite a few WB discs which are superb. I think 'Harry Potter 4' is superb in parts (though just a little uneven), with a few fantastic set pieces which are as good as anything I've seen on high def.
Talking of old films, 'Casablanca' looks fantastic.

Re: Warner Bros whats the deal??
I must be unlucky. I just thought that they would have done a better job of the first two superman films as there classics. I know they can only make the mastering as good as the original print but theres no reason for bad contrast.
Thanks
Nigel

Re: Warner Bros whats the deal??
If you want to see a reference Blu-Ray released by Warner then get 'A Scanner Darkly'
