For about 1 year I was paying for up to 8MB broadband and getting a downstream speed of about 1.5MB, I was OK with this but I got a phone call from BT saying my contract was to expire and I needed to sign a 18 month contract and our service would not change, so we agreed.

I then got an email saying our broadband plan (BT Option 3 - which is supposed to also be up to 8MB) was being switched on in May and as soon as that happened my broadband speed has dropped to 0.5MB. It been this way for about 6 weeks! I have called BT everyday and got through to a non-UK call center and the guys and gals over there make me run the same tests over and over again.

They did however manage to get an engineer round who tested the line and said our max speed should be 1.5-1.6MB according to his test results but we have been put on a fixed speed of 0.5MB (we get 1.5-1.6 as we are 2KM from the exchange via line of sight and 4KM from the exchange via actual wiring) and it was most likely I was on a variable speed before.

I have tried my old router and the new BT Home Hub thing and tried differnt micro filters but nothing changes the speed.

Anyway I keep calling BT and telling them this and they don't seem to do anything does anyone have a number I can call to get to someone that might actually help me or put me back on my old service? Or would switching ISP's help?

These numbers are from a similar problem some little time ago but may still work

BT Chairman's Office: 0207 356 5000. Be polite, invite their help. It does work

BT broadband guru Andy Wright 01324 456 241

There is a raft of escalated broadband guys in BT. Finding them is not easy because they are generally run off their feet. But if you can find one you are on the way

If all else fails, write a letter of complaint and ask to be released from the new contract. Get a MAC to migrate to one of the better ISP's who have more time and more clout with BT. Check www.thinkbroadband.com for the better ones which will not be one of the big boys. Try Madasafish, Pipex, Newnet, freedom2surf

Thanks for your help mate. I'll give those numbers a call and see if they can help sort out my broadband problems.

I've had the same problem with BT over last week and a bit.

BT cut my connection, and when I did get it back, my speeds are awful, have sent 2 emails to Mr Duncan Ingram, if you want his email address, PM me and I'll send it to you.

Mr. Ingram is Managing Director of Customer services

Hope he can sort out my problems, otherwise I have informed him I'll be leaving BT and will be informing Watchdog, ISPA and Ofcom.
